UPC Horizon service .... where is the modem ?

Trying to help my son improve his BB access in his mother's house. But he came home to me today and says the modem is INside the TV set top box ????

Is this true ? if so I can't think of any ways of improving wifi coverage if it has to stay under the tv .... :rolleyes:

(I have normal UPC with the godawful cisco)

You can either add an external wireless access point or ask UPC to disable the modem in the Horizon box and use an external cable router

So if we run an ethernet up to the room upstairs .... what would that wifi point be called that we would put at the end of that ? a full wifi modem ? an extender ?

The cisco/thompson boxes you get from UPC are a combination of a cable modem and a Wifi AP. You cannot buy the modem (property of UPC) but you can buy a separate AP in almost any electrical goods store. You might often see things advertised as "cable routers" - these are usually just APs.

NP. Configuring an additional access point is inexpensive, not too tricky and once set up requires almost zero maintenance.
