With all the talk about storms two ships have arrived in Galway Docks with a cargo of wind turbines, I have never seen blades as big as these, take a look at some great pictures of them in the docks on this link

They are big blades, they look like the off shore type I dont think they would be near any houses, when they are joined together they will be massive.

I reckon I saw some of that hardware (the small bits) being transported westwards through Salthill by truck this morning. Wondered what it was. That'll be some load to carry...

reckon they're for the wind farm in Derrycrih, just west of Barna golf course http://goo.gl/maps/AiOtg

the turbines have a hub height of 78m, blade diameter of 82m, total tip height of 119m

    🌦️ 6.7kwp, 45°, SSW, mid-Galway 🌦️

I was down the docks near where the fuel tanks and Cold Chon is located, there is a large area opposite Cold Chon where new fencing has gone up and the ground has been re-surfaced, they were putting the turbine blades in there.

I was coming out of Tesco last night when they were transporting these on trucks, bloody massive things. Got a nice video of the first one getting stuck at the Tesco junction turning right from Dunnes to go over the bridge. Its still uploading, I'll post a link in the morning.

In the meantime, here's some pic's

    Great pics thanks for sharing.

Good to see the docks earning money from sources other than car parking!

As promised, here's the video. Its 5 mins long and not too much happening except for a lot of manouvering to try get it through the junction. There's a second truck with an additional turbine blade that follows through near the end of the video

    enjoy

Anybody know what route they take from the Docks to Derrycrih with these huge wind turbine blades?

don't know but it should've been specified and mapped in the project's submitted EIS, which should be online

They could also be for the site on Spiddal-Moycullen road. Numerous concrete deliveries to site over last few weeks.

I couldn't guarantee not to scratch your car if I was driving that thing.

Interesting. I didn't know that. A thought occurs: would the Bodkin roundabout have made any difference?

EDIT The planning reference number is 09/1326, available here: www.galway.ie/en/Services/Planning/PlanningQuerySystem/. Unfortunately I was unable to access the EIS.

The trucks left the harbour hotel area, out under the railway bridge, out to the junction at college road, through them traffic lights on the right side of the road, staight through the junction at huntsman, continued up the monivea road, left at thermo king and over to the junction at the tuam road(trappers inn) right there to the lights at flemmings( tuam road junction). down the eastern bypass(bothar na threabh) in by terryland dunnes to the new junction at galway shopping centre, right here across the bridge to the roundabout at the back of the hospital, right here to the traffic lights at the westwood, out the n59 to the turn off for Barna, straight up that road down as far as the turn off just before Barna village, they then done a 3 point turn there and back upto the junction at barna golf club(paddys cross) where they turned left and on to the windfarm..

Jez but they are massive, spoils the view in that area, I dont like wind turbines, if you go to the prom and look at the hills behind the lighthouse there are lots of turbines there and no one can say they dont spoil that area

I agree however would hate to live near one especially if I had to deal with light flicker and the noise...that is unless it was on my land!
