Well I decided to start another thread to alert people that there's a possibility of another severe storm tomorrow but most likely tomorrow night and Christmas Eve. People might not expect there to be another warning in the old thread. Also it's the biggest travelling day of the year and people might be traveling with small kids etc so it's important people beware.

So far met eireann have issued an orange warning for strong winds and it may be upgraded to a red warning later. At the moment it's looking like a repeat of last Wednesday but they said on the forecast that the low out in the Atlantic responsible for the storm we are expecting is "developing explosively" and it's unsure whether it will be stormy or very stormy at this point.
If you're traveling tomorrow check the forecasts before you leave .

I edited this post to reflect that the timeline for this storm is looking like tomorrow night and Christmas eve.

I'm out in Connemara and there is thunder and lightning going on big time.
About 2 miles away (since flash/sound is about 10 secs apart).
No way I'm going out for wrapping paper in this.

Town isn't so bad - perhaps it's gonna miss us (just perhaps!)?

Very heavy downpour now and gusty wind but nothing dangerous yet in the city centre

Looks like they were closing off part of the prom earlier (around 4:30), diverting people up by Kelleher's garage.

THURSDAY (St Stephen's Day) ... The benign start to the day with sunshine disappearing behind high cloud will gradually change to stormy conditions in the west and south, as winds rapidly increase from the SE to S at 60-100 km/hr by afternoon, and rain becomes heavy at times. This storm won't arrive in the east and north until perhaps near sunset or early evening, and the winds will increase there at that time. Highs for the day will reach 11-13 C during the evening or around midnight, but mid-afternoon readings will be closer to 7-8 C.

THURSDAY NIGHT into FRIDAY ... Extreme storm conditions are possible, south to southwest storm force winds 100-140 km/hr with significant damage especially near coasts where battering waves could overtop some seawalls. Rainfalls of 20-35 mm may produce spot flooding and tidal conditions may also combine with the rainfall to produce urban flooding near the south and west coasts. Temperatures will be steady 11-13 C during the early morning and will then gradually fall through the day with winds more westerly, passing squally showers of rain and hail with thunder, and readings near 7 C. Snow is only likely to enter the picture over higher parts of the north by evening.
This is according to MT CRANIUM....

Just on Met Eireann now, winds increasing tomorrow from the South gale force 8 to strong gale force 9 further increasing to storm force 10, backing westerly and further increasing to violent storm force 11, thats for South, West and North coasts

Problem with this coming storm is the time, its going to last for a good 24 hours compared to the one last week which caused the flooding was only intense for around six hours, this is a huge storm depression coming in.

Keep checking weather boards for updates as they are very knowledgeable guys there

High tide isn't a high as it was last time so depending on the size of the storm surge there shouldn't be too much flooding. But id stay well away from exposed coastal areas in the city tonight.

There is a cool visual representation of the storm here: http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=-7.18,52.70,3000

Taken from weather boards forecaster M T Cranium

I hope Galway city or regional authorities have been made aware of the storm surge potential which could be higher than the full moon event due to this extreme gradient. There could also be significant wind damage in areas impacted by shore flooding making rescues or recovery difficult. Anyone who has parked within 5 metres of tide level should seriously think about moving their vehicle to a safer spot, huge waves could crash over sea walls even if the surge doesn't. (added comment, Estofex map seems too far north, svr tstm potential south and central Ireland)

Hope it wont be as bad as the last one

Anyone know what time high tide is

It doesn't look like the peak of the swell coincides with high tide. The swell will be at its highest from about 3am to about 9am tomorrow, high tide isn't until 12:15pm so Salthill might be ok. Its a big swell though, peaking at around 30 - 34 ft tomorrow morning at around 6am.

Agree about Galway Bay FM their newsroom should be on air warning about this storm, they seem to think because its Christmas nothing happens life stops for a week , Christmas can be and has been before a very newsworthy time.

Anyone that did not know this storm was coming must be safe living in a cave.

Beware of localised flooding in road dips. On a really dark road a fella suddenly served into oncoming traffic (me) to avoid a puddle. It wasn't a close call but scary nonetheless.

    Taken from City Tribune facebook

Galway Lifeboat has been stood down from a call to Galway Docks after a woman was blown into the water. She is safe and well. Well done to the emergency services who are out risking their lives tonight.

Please take precautions tonight in this weather and heed the warnings. Wild out there.

She wasn't actually blown in. She thought she was was landlocked at the Mud Dock and panicked. Fair play to the emergency services who were on the scene within minutes and lads watching their boats who helped search.
