So many variables, how do you know what is working/not working?

The last time I played Championship Manager was 12 years ago and back then you just had to worry about buying in decent players and positioning them. You buy a player in and try him out and you know after a few games if it's working or not.

Now there is countless variables to consider (in FM 2014). It seems impossible to know what works or doesn't work and hence makes the game just feel like an exercise in randomness. Is it just me or does anyone else have this experience of the game?

It can feel like that at the beginning - but id say its built to be that way

very rarely a manager walks in a has an airtight tactic with a solid squad

so u have to build slowly and tinker slightly
