really not at a fan of bad windstorms

You will be much closer to the calmer "eye" of this very deep storm than most. Therefore you might think later that there is no big storm because your wind speeds may drop off considerably as the centre gets closer to Malin Head about 0600h. Then your winds might gradually increase from the west to northwest during the late morning and mid-day and peak in the afternoon but only at 100-120 km/hr at worst. These comments might also apply to readers in northwest Mayo only everything a bit earlier there, eye is likely to be visible on radar about midnight to 0200h passing Belmullet. The closer this tracks to Ireland, the worse it will be for most but then parts of the north could escape for a longer period.

Probably some outages nothing new other than a localised fault in Mayfield showing up on Powercheck.

well that was the first time it happened tonight.

Maybe a separate thread should be opened for plane spotting?

I really don't get the insistence here on rigidly sticking to weather and weather alone here. This is a severe storm - why shouldn't the consequences of that severe storm be discussed ? Should all the emergency services posts be moved to the emergency services forum ? What about any posts mentioning ships - confine to the transport forum ? Reports of utilities going down are not strictly weather related either. There's clearly an appetite within the forum for discussion of the various effects of this storm IMO. By all means have a thread for the pure science of the weather itself if needed but there should be a place to discuss the storms consequences too.

Rapid rise in pressure now and a veer in the wind direction to southwest in the past 20 mins. Wind dropped off but I expect the main event to begin soon.

Not going to peak until tomorrow here in the NW, don't expect anything out of the ordinary though, it shouldn't be any worse than what we've had a few times already this week in Donegal

Power is out to the west of Charleville although it's not showing on the ESB network map. Wind has died off a bit but is starting to pick up again - can hear the wind rising again.

Given most of the estimated restore times are ca midnight I guess I'm online as long as I have a battery.

what about overnight ( sorry forgot ask in above post )

I think it takes a while for the ESB SCADA network to publish the information on the website. It's possibly not quite 100% realtime, but maybe updated every 15mins or something like that.

After about an hours lull in Castlebar the winds are picking up again, still not as strong though as they were between 6-7, we had 3 hours of near constant torrential rain as well, only stopped in the last few minutes.

The girlfriends power is gone in Galway though.

Knock Taf, seen worse but the strongest winds between 6am - 10am tomorrow morning

This thread is currently being viewed by 1,500 active members; that's three times that of After Hours.

This is chiefly to the credit of the meteorological experts who are providing excellent resources regularly throughout the course of the storm.

So thanks to everyone involved, particularly those who provide superb summaries of the current state of the storm.

when 30000 homes were out last Thursday morning due to lightning in wexford and Wicklow, that wasn't up on power check for about a half hour.

Early morning is looking very dangerous, expect a lot of travel disruption in Air Sea and Rail. 50kts over land at 06z is incredible

from my limited knowledge and habitual viewing of the met eirann rainfall radar it looks like the rain will clear in 90mins here in Kildare/Dublin, will the strong wind remain for the rest of the night and are there showers to be expected around 1am?

Just come in from being out with the dogs it's not so bad in Kilkenny City I'm not to sure where the other posters from Kilkenny are locally based but in the city it's windy with rain but nothing like it seems other places are getting hit with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 86 ✭✭hats199

Its shifted up a gear massively in Kinsale in the last 30 minutes, no rainfall but extremely strong winds, I can't believe I left Galway for a storm reprieve.

The radar isn't showing all the rain in the west/middle part of the country since the Shannon radar seems to be down.
