    Hey guys,

My surround sound system is the weak link of my home ent set up and want to learn more about upgrading. Got a PS4 for Christmas and have a 46" Samsung LCD TV. At the time of getting the TV (4 years ago) was given a Sony DAV-DZ231 surround sound system which I was happy with at the time, but I know I could be doing much better now.

I don't have a huge budget and our living room is average size (I suppose it's a normal 3-bed semi-detached type sized living room). Just wondering what you might suggest in terms of upgrading? I note your sale is on at the moment hence why I thought the timing right to ask.

    Thanks so much.

Fox - here are a few suggestions at different price levels:

    1: Pioneer HTP072 (£249.95)
    http://www.richersounds.com/product/speaker-packages/pioneer/htp072/pion-htp072

At £249.95 with a decent VA receiver and a full 5.1 speaker package the HTP072 is a really excellnet unit and just cannot be beaten if you are looking for a good quality, easy to set-up matched AV unit without spending a fortune!

    2: Yamaha RXV375 / Tannoy TFX5.1 Package (£399.95)
    http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/home-cinema-separates-bundle-deals/pah011464

A huge step up in quality - the Tannoy TFX speaker package looks great and sounds even better - the 100Watt sub and dedicated AV Centre speaker all add to the excellent quality and the black gloss TFX finish looks great - the RXV375 is an amazing sounding receiver at a reasonable price - What Hi-fi gave it a full 5 star review and made it their Best Buy for AV amps under £350: http://awards.whathifi.com/awards/2013/home-cinema-amplifiers

    3: Sony STRDN1040 / Monitor Audio Mass 5.1 system ( £949.95)
    http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/home-cinema-separates-bundle-deals/pah011405

Getting really serious now - The Sony STRDN1040 received the Product of The Year award from What Hifi: http://www.richersounds.com/package/system-savers/home-cinema-separates-bundle-deals/pah011405 - this was when it was reviewed at £500 - likewise the stunning Monitor Audio Mass package received best speaker package in the 2012 awards when reviewed at £800! http://www.monitoraudio.co.uk/products/mass/ so to have a £1300 package reduced to just £949 makes it exceptional value and this package will have the scale to match your large screen TV. The Sony 1040 has 4K upscaling, Apple Airplay, built in Wifi and control aps for both Apple & Android. This really is a super package both in value and performance terms.

    4. Yamaha RX-A3030 / Monitor Audio Radius R90HT1 ( £2699.95)
     http://www.whathifi.com/review/rx-a3030
    http://www.whathifi.com/review/monitor-audio-radius-r90ht1

Best Home Cinema receiver £1500+ is a huge award to win and the Yamaha has been awarded this in 2013 again by What Hifi - ts a monster amp and very few amps can either match the feature set or AV quality of the RX-A3030. Add the What hifi Best speaker package up to £1800 - the R90HT1 and you have a £3500 system that sounds plain amazing - the Monitor Audio Radius system also looks really gorgeous with a piano lacquer black or white finish - With an £800 saving for 2 brand new products it really is excellent value and a great audio match.

Thanks again for the opportunity to quote and drop us a line if we can assist in any way,

    Hey John,

Thanks so much for the really indepth reply.

Unfortunately my budget is pretty limited so it would be one of the first 2 options probably. Saying that, the second one (Yamaha RXV375) does sound like good value and very good quality. The WhatHiFi review makes it sound pretty awesome.

Sorry if this question is naive, but I note that WhatHiFi mention it as a best buy for under £350 but I note your price is £399 (down from £499. Is there something in addition that you're offering or why the higher price?

In terms of delivery/set up, is it all relatively straightforward? Would I need to run cabling under floorboards and would I need someone to set it up for me?

And finally just a general query - how long does a system like this normally last in terms of years? Is it a longterm investment or something that people normally replace within a couple of years?

    Thanks,

    Cormac

    Cormac,

apologies - a couple of posters did reply correctly but their responses were snipped.

The increased price for the RXV375 is because we have also included the Tannoy TFX 5.1 speaker pack which is £249.95 on its own - this is not included in the recommended retail price of the Yamaha or in the review.

In terms of setup - its quite easy and setup once you follow the instructions is a doddle - you will need to run speaker cables, but thats simple and to be honest you will have to o that no matter what 5.1 system you purchase.

In terms of lifespan - Yamaha is pretty much the most reliable brand out there, so it could last decades - however the natural technological progression of Home Cinema is what normally renders these products obselete - I'd guess there are 100's of thousands of AV receivers gathering dust in cupboards all across Ireland, whilst the shiny new one with the latest tech is happily installed under the new telly!

Apologies again for the delay and keep me posted if we can assist,

    ATVB,
