That apparently comes with the Raspian OS ...... forum here ......
    http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=66

    This might help
    http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianXBMC

There are alternative OSs available which are also especially built for media work and use XBMC ..... I use Openelec for instance ....

Openelec is the most straight forward to install.

Having tried the others, I would say it was the least painful.

Thank you , should i just buy a new sd card and download Openelec on to it from my laptop or can i use the sd card i already used and apologies if this is a really stupid question !

You can get the R-Pi Openelec image on line and there are instructions for installing it.

It will overwrite the present OS on the card.

Raspbmc also worth a look at.

Openelec is the easiest and best IMHO.
The wiki goes through the steps pretty well - http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Installing_OpenELEC_on_Raspberry_Pi
At the bottom choose wheter you are installing from a windows platform or not - http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php?title=Installing_OpenELEC_on_Raspberry_Pi#tab=Windows

It starts off confusingly talking about linux, just ignore that and go down to the bit about windows

I just had a look at the instructions for windows for installing openelec, I have to say, the installation of raspbmc appears to be more straightforward (download a windows installer, use it to install the OS (takes a few seconds) then slot the card into the pi, turn it on and have a coffee as it installs)
No need to manually create partitions or start up files - is there a simpler way to install openelec?

    Exactly.

Nothing easier than RaspBMC for someone who wants to be up and running in little or no time.
Probably learn more with Openelec so it depends on what you want from the process.

I found Openelec very easy, just formatted SD, wrote image and it booted up with everything working

    I've used this guide to install openelec on a pi;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGFdQVwc8Q0

It does require a USB drive as part of the installation but is well worth it.

That guys youtube channel has a lot of useful fixes and tweaks to get the best out of a pi.
