Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

...just because you're self-conscious about your weight Mrs. BMI Greater Than 40 :pac:

I bet you can't even split your hair from already eating it :D

    Bit uncalled for

Apart from my joke about being too short I show that this is quite inaccurate. I am just under 6 foot but am 110kg, ok I'm carrying a bit but I scored 34. When I am fully in shape I am still 100kg which is still classed as obese. I play rugby at a high standard, can bench press 130kg, deadlift 200kg, squat 160kg and ran a charity 10k in 53 minutes just before Christmas I am not obese! It takes no account of body composition

That's kind of the discursive equivalent of mooning at somebody from a coach window on a school trip.

Devils advocate. Just cause you can lift heavy weights doesnt mean youre not obese. Also 53 minutes for ten k is jogging. No offense intended here.

The realistic way of interpreting this is...

    I'm considered clinically obese...
    I smoke...
    I drink a lot...
    I've eaten a sh1tload over Christmas...

Now, if only everyone was that honest! I also breathe car fumes, other peoples' flatulence, CFCs. And drink flouridated water (when home on hols), Nash's Red Lemonade and lots of strong tea. I eat lots of food have a good appetite and a penchant for Apple Pie and Ice Cream most nights.

I am bold, so bold. And only deserve the haughty bilious hectoring of the FoodNazis that have popped their heads up from the sliced breast of chicken to peek over the plates of turkey and cranberry sandwiches. Woe is me :D

    I think I'll die. Eventually!

BMI isn't supposed to be an accurate way of determining how fit someone is, it's a rough estimate which happens to work for the majority of people, it's not intended to be taken as undeniable truth. It's not an outdated method of determining fitness at all, it's just a simple calculation done with measurements most people know in the first place, and it works as that, it's grand for people who aren't bodybuilders or athletes who need to know their exact body fat level, provided they also use common sense and can realise when the estimate may not be right.
And even at that, the amount of fat someone is carrying is not a way to determine actual fitness either. I've been training in my sport for years, and until about a year ago I was borderline morbidly obese, but my fitness levels were not compromised at all and I could still go for a long time, after losing over 40lbs, my fitness level has increased marginally at best.

53 mins for 10km at 110kg is fair going.

Yeah it's an average time there were many faster but classifying as obese is silly. When I think obese I think of people that struggle with stairs in their house. I know this BMI thing has been done to death but its misleading sometimes. Anyway, I'm ordering a Chinese now, any recommendations?

Genuinely wasnt putting you down. Fair play.

I just think obese is a misunderstood term. you dont have to look like a blimp to be obese. Again this isnt aimed at you.

Because it's your weight divided by your height squared.

    Totally made up formula.

The ONLY way to get a true %body fat reading is to get a DEXA scan.

Even skinfold calipers can be +/- 3%.

Body fat % is the only true way to get an idea if someone is average/overweight whatever.

20% bf is the male average & 25% the female average

Because according to that im a BMI of 1.6 off being overweight and the only bit of fat on my entire body is a small bit on my waist (and im not exactly big). I can lose that and put on extra muscle putting me into "overweight".
I wouldnt trust an internet calculator for anything outside currency.
Every body is different and a height/weight calculator is going to be massively inaccurate.

Not saying its exact. Or the best method. Just that for the average joe its not going to be too far off.

And I'd agree for a completely sedentary person.
Anyone who does any bit of proper training however. Is a different story

These results mean nothing, you could have 2 people who are 6 foot and weigh the same, doesn't mean they should have the same BMI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

20.5, used to be closer to 19 earlier this year.

To be quite honest, I think just looking at yourself in the mirror is a better measure than BMI

It's rude to comment on a person's physical appearance and to do so in the name of humour is unforgivable.
