I'm ordering items of a sensitive nature (don't want them delivered to my house) from amazon.co.uk, and I was wondering if there's any way of having my local post office keep the parcels for collection...

I mean, they do this anyway if no-one's home when they come to deliver it. So surely you can ask them to keep the next parcel of mine that comes their way?

I tried looking on their website but to no avail so has anybody got any tips?

EDIT: Also, does Amazon have any of those lockers or Collect+ stores in Eire? Couldn't find any on their site but that seems mad...

You could ask at the Post office, but given that mail is many areas is sorted far away from the atual post office, the chances of that working out.

I don't think Amazon offer collect services here.

Could you use something such as Parcel Motel?

    Amy,

AnPost offer two services but neither of them would probably suit you.

Redirection: Allows all the post for your address to be delivered to another address instead but it costs €60 for any period shorter than 3 months.

MailMinder Service: All the post for your address will be kept at your local sorting office and you will have to pick it up from there but it costs €40 for any period shorter than 4 weeks.

Your best bet, as already mentioned, is to use Parcelmotel. You open a parcelmotel account, they then give you a unique customer number. When ordering from amazon you then set the delivery address of your goods to be the delivery address of parcelmotel in Ireland with your parcelmotel account number as the name in the delivery address. Amazon send the goods to parcel motel, then parcelmotel will email or sms you to tell you they received a parcel for you and you can pick it up from your nominated locker site.

The service is excellent if you know you will be receiving a parcel but won't be home to pick it up or you cannot collect missed parcels from the post office during work hours or if you don't want people at home to see what you are getting. It costs 3.50 to use the service. You can pick it up anytime, 24 hours a day anonymously from the parcelmotel pick up site.

Of course you could just change the delivery address to that of a friends house, if you don't mind them knowing what you are receiving.

All parcels from the internet generally come in a plain box(they dont write contains sex toys, condoms etc on side the of the box). Amazon just uses generic brown boxes for everything.I wont worry what someone in An Post thinks. Im sure they have seen it all

Back when I was a young lad, long before the days of internet porn, I used to occasionally order porno videos (VHS tapes) from abroad. I couldn't have them delivered to my house as I still lived at home with my parents and my mother would have wanted to know what the packages were, regardless of how they were wrapped. Luckily, I had a very understanding friend who had her own business, so I used to get them delivered to her office instead.

Back in the days before the internet if you wanted to buy a porno movie here is how it worked.

You bought a photography magazine (no porno mags in Ireland, not even Playboy or Penthouse). In the classified ads section there were companies that sold adult movies. You wrote a letter to them asking for a list of movies, you included a one pound sterling money order to cover the postage. They sent you their movie list which comprised of a list of titles and prices with brief descriptions, no pictures even. You then filled out the order form and sent it off with either sterling cash or an international money order from the post office. A couple of weeks later you would (hopefully) receive your tape in the post. When I was 18 the first thing I bought when I got my first job was a VCR. They were expensive machines in those days I had to buy it on hire purchase in 12 monthly instalments.

Nowadays if I want to see porn, I can see almost anything imaginable, for free in only a few mouse clicks. In the 80's it involved a magazine, a couple of hand written letters, a couple of money orders from the post office, a VCR and a friends delivery address. With no guarantee the tape would arrive or whether the film would be any good or not.

    Ain't progress grand!!

Using parcel motel is great. First 2 deliveries are free. It can also save you a fortune on deliveries from the uk.

I don't have a mobile phone number though, so I can't be signing up to parcelmotel.

although I guess if its just plain packaging it's manageable...

and it's not sex toys btw >_> just girls clothes

You don't get the free deliveries anymore, but it is still a good service.
