External HDD for phone.

I was just thinking there i have a 320 GB 2.5" laptop drive lying around. And i looked up to see could it actually work by plugin it into my phone. I don't no about and actual drive but memory cards do so i was think couldn't i do it with a drive along as it had an external power source? The reason i wanna to try it with an HDD is iv a lot of music + movies so id need to buy a big memory card and that kinda suck while i have this drive lying around.


Like if i was to use a caddy like this it wouldn't be powered from the phone. I'm guessing no but id like an other opinion.

Apart from this Hard drive, you should also check the product of other well known vendors. Then, you would be able to compare hard drive on different criteria. This approach makes your path easy for opting a cheap & best external hard drive.

The real problem will be if your phone can actually power the drive... im guessing the answer will be no. In which case you will need a powered enclosure.

Also if its and iPhone it will probably be a whole lot harder.

Nah i have a moto g. not a fan of apple to be honest :P

additional: This is my idea just for traveling, i can have the HDD with all my music and videos on it, then using this:

Also if anyone knows what this wire is called please tell me iv been try to find one on a couple of sites an have had no luck

I can plug it into my phone using the cable that "Ozmo" linked and using a usb car adapter plug the other side in to power it. i dont see why that wont work, what do ye think ?

Might want to check if android can read NTFS okay, not sure it can.

Crap never thought of that

Is there anyway or program that would them format it into something android can read because i need to root my device and in some other things for it to work otherwise and i haven't done that before and not entirely sure how to.

Store your stuff in Google Music, pin the stuff you need on the phone or stream it.

For movies I have a NAS at home which streams them nicely, but I guess it's not portable if you need that.

Its not so much i cant do it like that its just i just have the hard drive lieing round there nothing wrong with it, i started out just thinking about would it actually work and now it seems it will and why not it it will only cost like 15 euro for the bits i need and ill never need to complain about not having enough storage on my phone again
