Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Quick question re electrolytes and gels, what's the right amount to use on the day? Would 2 tablets in a drink per 1.5 hours and 4/5 gels be overdoing it on the day?

I did the ROK last year and brought 4 gels with me to use and still had 3 of them at the finish, i found the food stops through out the day enough to keep the energy levels up as you get tea, cakes, fruit and all types of food. there was also a stand to top up your bottle with HIGH 5 at the top of both big climbs.
I did use high 5 electrolytes in 1 of my bottles through out the day and water in the other.

on the ROK the general rule of thumb is 2 slices of barmbrack and butter every 3-4 hours and a cup of tea and you will make it around just fine. If your electrolytes are low a pint of bulmers or stout in Spillane's Pub will do the trick!

what have you tried on your training spins? there is no answer to this. if you haven't used them before, don't use them on the day as you have no idea how your stomach will react. stick to the solid food at the food stops.

Ok cool, good to know that they look after you with all that stuff during the spin...

Haha works for me, would consider myself a serious cyclist though so il cutting out the barmbrack and opting for pavlova and apple tart ;)

Yeah that's a fair point... On a typical 60k spin I've used a 700ml bottle with 2 electrolyte tables and a normal bottle of water... On a 100k spin I've typically used the same proportionately with a few gels... suppose the question I'm asking is taking 7/8 tablets and 3/4 gels on the day of the ring a bit much? With all the food stops I'm hearing about, I might be better off getting the cake in and forgetting about the gels :)

this would be my strategy. last year they had time outs in between teh main stops as well.. mmm time outs

I don't recommend to anybody to use the official food stops as they are absolutely mental busy and you could be waiting for ages. Bring some money with you and stop at a small cafe or shop around the route and buy a sandwich or stop somewhere for lunch instead.

I'd have thought that amount of gels would be far more than necessary but then I wouldn't use any doing the ring. It's more of an endurance event than a race so a few stops and some food along the way should see you right.

I'd bring a pack of high 5 tabs and use them in one bottle and plain water in the other.

one in caherciveen is nuts, avoided that one last year. kenmare was fine though, although we may have been ahead of the main crowd(was all stopped in Sneem)

In previous years the stops were quite busy, as you can imagine with a steady stream of 9,000 cyclists bearing down on the one area. Last year was a lot better and this year will be the same if not even better still. Last year I left Killarney at a fairly busy time (around 8 am) and arrived with a crowd at Cahirciveen. There was a purpose built path going down to the school (avoiding the two way system of previous years) which made everything flow much, much better. You dropped your bike in behind the school (as usual) and joined a queue going into the gym hall for refreshments. The queue was one way, and was run akin to an assembly line whereby you got everything handed to you and you were moved swiftly along until you ended up in the main hall. It took me about ten minutes to queue up, get food and end up outside with everything I wanted. Leaving the school was via the main entrance which was now one way and made life so much easier. It was busy before, but it's organised a lot better now.

The ROK actually take suggestions on board, and each year strive to make the event better than previous years. Chances are if you found something that was less than exemplary about the event so too did other people, and if that is the case the committee know about it and are working to improve it. An obvious example here are the queues seen at registration last year. They will not be repeated this year as it was one of the big red flags seen at the time by officials on the ground, and later from feedback in the survey.

In terms of eating and what to bring with you on the day, generally what I found that works best for me (facing into my 12th ROK) is keep it simple; Water in one bottle (and if you're carrying a second use high5). Nature Valley bars do fine and you can always stock up on food at the food stops (you will never go hungry!). Always carry an emergency supply (for me it's two NV bars and a pack of wine gums) to be on the safe side.

Accuweather is giving dry and cloudy...met.ie is saying Wednesday onwards looking wet and breezy, but mention nothing about how long it'll last.

Dont care about the cloud and a dull day as long as it is dry. Would prefer an overcast and dry day to a very sunny dry day anyway.

    Hello all,
First time doing ROK, or any cycling event for that matter! Just wondering if I should take out insurance for the day? The ROK website mentions joining cycling ireland for 15 euro. Should I be covered in the event of causing harm or damage to anyone or their equipment?

Cycling Ireland insurance will cover your personal injuries as well as public liability which will cover any damages to anyone else's property. It will not cover your own property (i.e. bicycle).

quick question for veterans! I'm doing this with my brother but he has almost no training done! Is there an option for him to join in with me for the last 40k or so or what would you recommend?

If you could find any roads where he could join with you, however, after witnessing the sheer volume of cyclists last year I wouldn't recommend him cycling against the cycle to meet you. Perhaps he could get to kenmare and do the section through Molls gap and down to the finish?

Did 50k today not sure if that was a good or bad idea.

Won't touch the bike all week. Reckon I should be ok next week

I heard today that Gleneagle Hotel is doing an early-morning breakfast on the 5th July for €10 per head . AND .. it starts at 05.30am!

    Other deals are:

    1. Killarney Towers Hotel also doing breakfast from 5am for €9. Doing a Swim + Breakfast for €12.50 (Think that means the Swim is after the cycle!) They also offer a 1 x Hour Pool Visit for €5
    2. Aghadoe Heights doing a 4 course BBQ for €30pp. They also doing a Recovery treatment of massages for €95pp for 60 minutes

    .. that's all for now.

4 course BBQ for breakfast. That'll give us a clear run at the day :-)

Planning to do a 70k tomorrow morning and then drop the bike in for a service on Monday. Then ready or not it's the Ring next week.

Most places have either a room put aside or a safe area in their back yard for bikes, best to contact them beforehand or when you arrive and you'll be sorted.

16km/h is feck all! Anything under 25-30km/h wouldn't be too bad.

    Hi there
    Apologies.
The sachets given out last year were to be mixed in a 500 - 750 ml bottle of water and drank during the event to replenish your electrolytes.

It will depend on your hotel. Some just tell you to bring to your room, others will tag the bike and store in a secure room. Regardless all hotels will a have a plan for all the bikes.

I'd say many of us will be watching MT's forecasts intently for the next few days.
