Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You can't drive on the Gap of Dunloe. I'd avoid the areas as a whole in a car, have you looked a the road closures?

They can get to Molls gap from Sneem but getting to Sneem could be difficult. If they want to meet you Kenmare is best choice as you can get to Kenmare from Killarney via Kilgarvan handy enough.

The Gap of Dunloe/Black Valley road is a public road, I've driven it many times. If you wanted a longer drive then you can also go via Ballaghbeama.

You can, it's only the Jarvies who tell people they can't drive up it so they'll take a jaunting car trip instead

First ROK for me and there's some rain forecast..I'll be bringing a rain jacket but any other advice? I don't have waterproof pants/shoes, wear shorts as leggings might get heavy?

If it is mid teens, I'd wear jersey, shorts, bring a rain jacket and to keep warm I'd HTFU!

My friend and I are doing the ROK for the first time this year. We are not v fit but have done lots of cycles including a few 80-100km ones. We are v slow and always end up averaging at about 15-18 kms per hour! Will we be like two eejits with all the pros?! We plan to leave at 5. Do u just stay into the left so that people can pass u out?am a bit nervous of the crowds!

You will absolutely not be the slowest. Many people take the entire day to do it, because they're in it for the day out.

Regarding keeping in to the left, yes, please do. Like I always say, cycle the ROK like you'd drive it (as in, keep the same general rules of the road).

I love how people say go at your own pace, take it all in and enjoy the day.

Then come in here next week and say I got it done in 5hr45, what was your time?

I have 2 registrations and it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to use them (my friend can't make it, and I'm not pushed about doing it on my own) I'm in cork city and I have the wrist bands and entry numbers collected. PM me if interested. €70 donation to Valentia community centre for each registration.

If anybody is interested in joining us, please let me know.

I'm also around 22 kph and will also avail of all stops + ice cream !! if available.
    Probably start around 6am ish.
Tis my 1st ROK and plan to enjoy it and have the criac.
Staying in Scotts hotel for the weekend, to soak up the atmos & pints!!
Anyone fall into the above bracket and looking to make up a group, let me know...as it looks like it will be windy, so cycling in a group will save allot of suffering.....

Quick question lads: I've managed to get a registration from a friend. I gave him €70 but he gave me his sponsorship card which I need to sign in, but is blank. It still cost €70 to register even if you took a sponsorship card correct? It's a bit late in the day for me to get further sponsorship, but if the €70 I gave him is still in the RoK pot I don't mind handing in an empty card. Cheers

I got a sponsorship card and didn't have to pay €70 at all- Im just drawing a line through my card and writing €70 and paying them myself.
Where does it say €70 must be paid?

Hmmm, last year I paid €60 and just got a receipt with barcode emailed to me (no sponsorship). I thought the way it worked was that you could either pay the entrance fee yourself with no sponsorship card or you could pay the fee, get a card and offset the entry fee against what you collected. Either that or I've given him €70 for no reason!

Your friend should already have paid 70 euro when he applied which will end up in the pot, so you should be ok with the empty card

I paid the €70 and got a sponsorship card but I dont plan on collecting any more money so Id say he did the same.

My friend and I have a problem. We registered online in April, the payment was taken shortly after. We have been recieiving mails up to now but yesterday we noticed the barcode requirement. Neither of us have recieved a bar code and I have sent mails and talked to them yesterday, where I was told we are in danger of not getting a tag now, and being told we should have contacted them months ago - which I did. This is entirely down to ROK and I hope they can sort before Saturday. Anybody else in same boat?

This year you had to pay the fee up front then you could collect money if you wanted, to either offset or increase the donation is my understanding of it

    Skyhighflyer,

Couple of options were available when registering.

If your friend signed up thru one of the charitys then he would have got his sponsorship card for free off the charity and the common practice would be to donate the €70 entry fee yourself on the card plus anything extra would might raise. This sponsorship card would be stamped with the name of the specific charity on it and everything you donate/raise would go to that specific charity.

Another option that was available was to pay the €70 to the general ROK fund but still receive a sponsorship card if you wish to raise more. Anything raised through this option would be divided between all the charitys.

Final option was to sign up, pay the €70 and be done with it but clearly as your friend received a sponsorship card they didnt choose this option.

Cheers lads, I asked him and he paid €70, the sponsorship card is the 'general' one and not for a specific charity.

    Hey Guys :)

My Dad is cycling on Saturday, but he has no barcode, was never sent one. I've emailed the Ring of Kerry folks and being trying to get through to them on the phone all morning but I can't. What does one do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭Uberbeamerman

The one in Cahirsiveen is just beyond the town and to the right.....kenmare is a bit more out of the way and you have to cycle through the town to actually get to it (well worth it though)

Street view for Cahirsiveen : https://www.google.com/maps/@51.939789,-10.238469,3a,75y,263.66h,82.1t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1shCyOtw8dFTRX59M04Vcbzg!2e0

    Street view for Kenmare:
    https://www.google.com/maps/@51.881859,-9.582452,3a,75y,322.76h,83.73t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s46rbRkMHxp0C2Jz_WajYGw!2e0

    ....with directions :)
    https://www.google.com/maps/dir/51.8819956,-9.5823554/51.883049,-9.5926781/@51.8823525,-9.59187,16z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m4!4m3!1m0!1m0!3e1

Edit: New food stop location in Kenmare...it'll be on the main Kenmare-Killarney road avoiding the town altogether (ie road going up to Molls Gap)

Finally got through to a lady who blamed me for deleting the mail. Funnily I know of 4 other people who have no bar code or reg, so I politely disagreed with her. Anyway was told to bring proof of payment (bank statement) and passport or driving license and go to the information kiosk, and not the registration kiosk.

More info on signing in, different "channels" for whatever option you signed up for, also photo i.d is Compulsory when signing on, that's new, if you are collecting a few tags, like many people do i wonder how that will work out?
New location for the Kenmare feed station.

It's worth checking the spam folder for emails that were sent out in april-ish

Hadnt noticed the photo id part. I'll be sure to bring some. But I suspect it will cause chaos if they start to turn people away who have been in a queue for an hour or more.

Why have you assumed that people only enjoy a cycle if they do it slowly. Enjoying the day for many will be going at their own pace of 32km/h and taking it all in.

Sitting around drinking tea and chatting may be enjoyable to some but it's not for everyone.

There's plenty of sportives and races out there for people that want to race around in the quickest time possible. This is a charity cycle, a different event. People of all ages and levels going around taking in the scenery and enjoying the day. I remember being "overtaken" by some cycling club in full gear last year, practically being forced off the road. Get out of our way there's a swarm of bees coming through. Zzzzzzzzzzz

Oh give it rest. Some people will take it easy, some people will go a bit faster. It's a broken record at this stage.

It's a RACE! It's official :D as linked to by the ROK Facebook page, so go out, compete and race!

"The race starts at Mission Road Killarney, passes through Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Sneem, Kenmare, Torc and back to Killarney."
