I want to keep my skills sharp while I am doing little development in my current job so I am looking to contribute to a project on Github but I haven't trouble deciding on a project to work on. How should I decided?

Your post doesn't indicate skill level, language preference or your interests so it's going to be tough to suggest anything!

Why not search Github with the answers to the above questions as your search criteria and take your pick!?

OP, pick something that you use.

    Any specific reasons for github?

Indeed, find something that you feel is broken/could be improved in an open source lib you already use.

I have 2 years industrial experience in Java in all back end stuff. The way I have been searching for projects is by typing into the search bar language:java but I have been finding it hard to find something that would interest me.

I have been trying to think of stuff I actually use but not much is coming to mind.

My thinking on Github was that its the biggest thus would have the most projects and contributors.

Sourceforge.net is very popular and predates github.

So what does interest you? Why not start your own project and host it on GitHub?

I've found that a lot of open source projects are good if you have something to contribute, but getting maintainers to actually accept pull requests can be a hassle, especially on more popular projects where there is a deluge of people wanting to contribute.

Which is exactly as it should be, its very irritating to see "contribute to open source" being used as advice for people learning /wanting to upskill. The last thing the open source community needs is people who don't know what they are doing attempting to submit patches.

Well, I agree with you in this context, but even as an experienced developer I've had pull requests ignored or rejected for questionable reasons (and plenty accepted).

I've got some really stupid pull requests on projects I've done in the past too, so I can understand how sick maintainers must get of it.
