Baptism of fire for a lot of the newbies on the Louth panel tonight.
Not looking forward to the Dubs Wednesday night with much optimism, a bad beating could be on the cards.
Not an ideal start to the season , especially with a red hot Division 2 season to face into .
A lot of certain starters missing from the Louth team, but felt we should be doing better.

Galway team to face Sligo tomorrow in the FBD. A number of new faces and two or three you'd rather not see but its good to have the season up and running again. With the weather that's predicted there could be some low scoring games tomorrow.

Yes was at the game alright, DCU put in a good display overall.DCU midfield was very good, oconnor and our own louthman Donelly as midfield partners

Parnelly park Wednesday, Dubs please go easy on us.:)

Interesting to see two Louth men at centre field for DCU considering the talent Louth already have around the middle. Should be able to put together a decent spine although O'Connor could end up in the forward line either.

As it stands Kildare are as good as through with a +47 points difference in group B

They will play the winners of group A. All to play for there with everyone on 2 points. UCD are top with a +5 difference and then Wexford with +2. UCD V Laois and Wexford V Offaly on Sunday

A bit more clear cut in C and D. Its winner takes all in Dublin V DCU and Wicklow V Meath.
Wouldn't mind a Dublin/Meath showdown in Pairc Tailteann to warm January up.

That would be the fixture of January if it happens. And Dublin are under strength at the moment even more so then ourselves. I really hope we can both make it to the Semi's as it would be a great occasion. This video is from the 2010 quarter final and this being a semi would be just as good if not better!

Eye catching result in the McKenna cup tonight. Tyrone 5-16 Armagh 0-7. Tyrone are good enough to win the div 1 title this year however if Armagh don't improve they could be a div 3 team by 2015.

Massive score to be putting up in January. Monaghan also put up an impressive 2-20 against Fermanagh.

Tyrone v Derry and Cavan v Monaghan in semis - should be two decent matches.

I doubt that. The counties whose seasons ended in September probably only went back training in December. Team holidays and the mandatory beak for Christmas would have further impacted their training. But the other 28-30 counties who ended their season in June, July or August could have gone back training months ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Always_Running

    Collective training

November 15 (teams knocked out in June) - New York, Carlow, Offaly, Antrim, Westmeath, Limerick, Tipperary, Wicklow, Sligo (football); Westmeath, London, Antrim, Carlow, Offaly (hurling).

December 1 (teams knocked out in July) - Down, Armagh, Fermanagh, Waterford, Clare, Roscommon, Longford, Leitrim, Louth, Wexford, Kildare, Derry, London, Galway, Laois, Meath (football); Tipperary, Kilkenny, Galway, Waterford, Laois, Wexford (hurling).

December 8 (teams knocked out in August and Kerry) - Monaghan, Cork, Cavan, Donegal, Tyrone,Kerry (football); Dublin, Limerick (hurling).

December 29: Mayo, Dublin (football); Clare, Cork (hurling).

Of course most counties would have been in the gym well before November.

I stand corrected, it never occurred to me that Dublin would have been different since they finished later in the season and that's what I based my comment on. It was meant to highlight that big scorelines aren't that astonishing in January, it's still pre-season after all. It would be better to wait and see what comes in the league or early championship before I'd agree with "some scoreline..." type comments.

My  response was because I wasn't sure what point you were making. While I agree that it's only pre-season, that's a pretty remarkable score to be putting up in January by any team but ever more so when you consider it is Tyrone putting it up against Armagh - the sworn enemy. It's very early days in the season but that could have big reprecussions for Armagh's season and Grimley's future - was following the match last night on the internet and it seems that Grimley's tactics were again incredibly niave - something he was heavily criticised about last year in the wake of the game vs Cavan. With Geezer lurking in the background and lots of politics at play in Armagh football this result could have big ramifications despite only being January.

Similarly the Monaghan result v Fermanagh highlights the problems in Fermanagh gaa circles and Fermanagh are a county who are at their lowest point in a long time. Again its only January but Fermanagh are in for another miserable year - last week while Cavan under 21s were playing Mayo in a pre-season tournament, Fermanagh were still trying to pick an under 21 manager for this season - a snapshot of what's happening in Fermanagh GAA circles.

I know Ulster football dosen't get a huge amount of discussion here like some of the other counties (that's not a dig btw :) - it's just a simple fact that there are not a lot of Ulster posters here - maybe with the exception of Cavan and Donegal) but last nights results in both those games could have big reprecussions and imo signal the shape of the seasons Armagh and Fermanagh and to a lesser extent Tyrone's (again it's early days but they are absolutely flying at the minute with a lot of new blood too).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Cheers for that post and the details, it lends a whole lot more credence to your comment that it really was something that could shape the football in Ulster this year. Egg on face, my knowledge of Ulster football let me down on this occasion

Don't like reading too much into January results but we have nothing else to go on until the league. Given the derby nature of Armagh/Tyrone you would think a better effort would be made. I wouldn't like Meath bending over like that to Dublin at any time of the year.
Armagh are in danger of being relegation fodder in Div 2 if they don't turn it around.

The Meath/ Dublin one is a good analogy - thrown the Crossmaglen/county politics into the mix (i'm not going to pretend I understand that stuff!!), the fact that Grimley has been heavily criticised about his tactis before and Geezer is lurking in the background and you have a right mess on your hands. If they don't sort things out soon it's going to be a bleak year for Armagh football - all you need now is for Jamie Clarke to go travelling again and Armagh would be dead certs for relegation imo.

Unreal result for Tyrone last night. It looks more like a bad reflection on Armagh though in the cold light of day.

Good campaign for Tyrone in the McKenna as per usual. Harte takes it seriously, perhaps too seriously at times but it's always nice to start the year winning and gaining confidence going into the league. A few new faces playing really well too and slotting right in by all accounts. I've not got to a game yet this year with living away but from what I hear the defensive system has changed to a man against man system so it could account for us having bit point tallys if we have a free man up front for a change.

I thought Fermanagh were decent in the league last year and were somewhat unlucky not to gain promotion, the fact they didn't probably affected their mindset for the championship. They have smaller pick than most of their neighbours in Ulster they really need their strongest 15 out.

I'm surprised Pete McGrath has returned to senior inter county management, he was a top manager but the game has changed a lot from the mid 90s.

You've a very short memory Tom!

Fermanagh were the first team to lose to London since 1977 in 2011. No amount of pre-season defeats erases that ignominy.

There has been big issues in Fermanagh gaa for a while now and it stems from a couple of things.

Discipline is a big problem in the camp and certain players are being picked that seem to have carte blanche to do what they want.

There is zero development going on at underage level - I read a stat that at minor and under 21 level they have won 3 out of their last 23 games - that's shockingly bad. They still haven't appointed an under 21 manager for this year. There is basically no plan in place.

You are right that they have a small pick and not all players have made themselves available from what I understand - doesn't help one bit.

Re Pete McGrath - while he looks a very good appointment and a good coup especially after having Peter Canavan last year - it was a chaotic appointment by all accounts - they asked him on the Wednesday night about taking over and he was announced the following night without all the county board knowing he was going to be appointed

It's sad to see tbh as a lot of people thought Fermanagh would kick on after their fantastic runs through the back door but that's a long way off and unfortunately they are destined to be bottom of the pile in Ulster unless things change..
