It is a kids book, but I read The Book Thief in my 20's and loved it, and also The Reader by Bernard Schlink

"The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath, "The Catcher In the Rye" by J.D. Salinger and "1984" by George Orwell come to mind straight away.

"1984" as mentioned. "Farenheit 451" and "Brave New World" another two I'd throw into the mix.

    The gingerman by JPDonleavy

I loved this when I read it in my 20s.
Re-read it 20 years later and couldn't see where the love came from..
    C'est la vie

"How to Win Friends and Influence People" - Dale Carnegie

I'm reading it at the moment. I'm only three chapters in, but I'm slowly beginning to think that this may end up being the most important book I have ever read.

I'll echo Catcher in the Rye, 1984, and Brave New World and add:

    FICTION

    Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
    Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
    Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco
The Secret History/The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
A Single Man - Christopher Isherwood
The Cement Garden - Ian McEwan
    Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut
Casino Royale (and other Bond books) - Ian Fleming

    NON-FICTION

Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell
Unreliable Memoirs (and its four sequels) - Clive James
    Autobiography - Morrissey

I'm currently reading "1984" and just finished "A Clockwork Orange", would recommend both.

I'm in my 20s and actually really enjoyed revolutionary road by Richard Yates. Basically a tale about a hopeful young couple and the disintegration of their relationship. But it was very well written.
