So here we are again with a new year, so the table is wiped and we start again! How many of these can you hit this year? Going to leave the marathons on the shelf and focus on the shorter distances for a while? This challenge is for both men and women who want to try and improve their performances with some arbitrary time goals.

PLEASE give some info on the race/your training/how you felt/next target etc when posting your times, so we don't end up with a boring thread of tables.

    The times are:

    400m - 1 minute
    800m- 150 seconds
    1 mile - 5 mins
    3k - 10 mins
    5k - 20 mins
    5miles - 30 mins
    10k - 40 mins
    10miles - 1 hour
    Half Marathon - 90 mins
    Marathon - 3 hours.

Bit confused. Is it 800m in 3 minutes or 1km in 3 minutes? Last year was 800m in 150 seconds. Why soften the standard or change the event?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,643 ✭✭✭ThePiedPiper

Am I right in saying that Larry Trent is the only person to ever have completed the big 10? Or did that actually happen? I reckon I'm good for 7 out of 10 of these in 2014...

Anybody think we should recognise the top 3 of this by years end?

My bad, copied table from wrong thread, fixed.

Nah, he completed the Big 8, which was 1 mile to Marathon. It didn't include 400m and 800m back then (though if you can do a mile sub 5 then you can obviously run 800m sub 150 seconds).

why not create a separate women table and have it all in the same thread.

e.g. 3 women under an hour in Ballycotton while 92 men were. And two of the women being 1st and 2nd in DCM 2013 :)

Yeah in fairness the standards for the two sexes are totally out of sync.. mods, if you can create a table with a female version of males plus 10%, that's probably fair..

There was a discussion about this before, the main problem was trying to come with a list of equivalent times for women. In fact there was a thread with times for woman now that I remember? (although this also caused some issues). I just don't want to put any ladies off the idea that these times are achieveable for them too, tough yes, but achieveable.

Lads there is a seperate womens thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056894287
I will set up a new one in a few days once the (many) ladies who have hit targets in the past few months fill in their 2013 times...

Ok 1st race of the year, munster indoors, senior 800m in nenagh today, really tough competition, despite a 5sec pb I still finished last but was good to get back racing and it was only my 2nd 800m. Didnt have the speed in the legs but I am currently training for a marathon in April so did a 16mile run Fri (thats my excuse anyway)

Can I throw out a suggestion to give the 5mile or 8k option for 30 minutes?
It's generally easier to find officially measured 8k races than 5 milers.
Also, anyone who does a 5-miler in sub-30, will have hit the 8k in the allocated time, as its 47m shorter.
Having said all that, I'm unlikely to hit that time this year, but worth considering.

The half marathon is a bit soft, should that not be changed to 80 mins?

Sounds fair enough to me, we won't fall out over 47m! ;)

There's nothing to stop you running under 80 mins but the time stays as it is. These are the original times that Racing Flat came up with so won't mess with them.

Equally the 5k and 5 mile are much easier than the 10k and 10 mile.
They are not supposed to be equivalent performances.

Just realized I have something to stick into the table after Saturday's Parkrun. Not a great time but I was aiming for position rather than a time. Hope to take more than a minute off of this over the next 5 months. Ambitious target, but hopefully 5 months of dedicated training will get me close.

That's one of the tough ones Dom. With your track background you might just be the man to complete the set, especially given you did the 3k ( and mile??) last year.

Dom's built for distance though, these days. If he could hit the sub 60 400, he'd be a shoe-in for the rest.

It begins!!! A good start to the running year in Raheny. Not sure what the structure of my running year will be this year but hopefully I'll have a crack at all the distances. The competition is going to be fierce. I reckon we could have multiple completers this year.

May aswell get in on the act. First 400m race of 2014 which was run at the Victorian Country Championships at the weekend. Finished 9th overall, missing out on the final by a sickening 0.15 seconds. My second fastest run, and while over half a second off the PB, the wind down the home straight was pretty awful so probably an equivalent performance to the PB which was set in the most perfect conditions imaginable.

One down nine to go. Hope to come back and revise this time in the summer but it will depend as that is when I aim to knock out the first five off the list.
Looking like I will have to give Frank Duffy or Stook a crack late in the year as it will hopefully be the last on the list at that stage

In terms of course I know but time wise in the year its probably the best opportunity, Would probably have to be in sub 57 shape to do so tbh but sure if I got it would cap off the challenge nicely :D

Well done srunner and welcome to the forum. Care to elaborate on any of these performances? Where did you do them? Which was the most challenging? Any plans to knock out the rest of the items in the table? Which do you think will be the hardest for you?

    Hi Krusty_Clown,

Thanks for the welcome, its a pity I've made a terrible start by first quoting the wrong table and then getting mixed up between what counts as the indoor 2014 season versus the calendar year of 2014. I had to remove my 3k time as it was done back on December 18th in the AIT Baseline Indoor meet. There'll be a 3k timetrial down at the club soon that'll I'll have to run instead now!

The 5k was done on New Years Day in the Tom Brennan, and the 5mi was in Raheny at the weekend.
Both races were tough, mostly because of the windy conditions and the fact that I went out like a hare and blew-up not long after the half-way point in each. I checked my watch at the half-way mark in Raheny and my split was 13:48, the second half split was 14:34. I know the first mile in races is often quick but I think my 5:20ish opener was asking a bit too much! I especially knew things were going to go badly when my club-mate Kiely_Unusual only passed me after about 1.5 miles, he'd normally be way ahead, he had a nice supportive word in my ear though which was really appreciated. Was still 35 seconds quicker than my time from last year, so I was happy enough.

Tom Brennan was a vicious affair having been out until 4am the night before, as it was New Years Eve, would have been a lot worse were it not for a Raheny runner who pulled a big group of us around the first lap (we all fell into single file behind him for the into-the-wind stretch), and then I clung on to another MSB fella I often finish shortly behind for the 2nd lap. He has the same name as me and seems to be a popular man in athletics in Dublin, so I always get to hear people cheering on my name around the course :) Again this was about 35 seconds quicker than last years race, but was about 30 seconds slower than my Jingle Bells time last month. I'll blame the wind and the lack of sleep!

As for the other distances, I'm mostly an 800/1500m runner and so its unlikely I'll race anything above 10k distance, if I even do that. I did the Great Ireland Run last year but I see that its the Sunday before Road Relays, a bit too close for my liking. I was knocked out for about a week after the GIR last year! I have no real season planned out ahead though so we'll see where my nose takes me :)

Ha, I wasn't aware it would give me away so easily. I guess its almost cheating in a way as us Crusaders have 12 3k timetrials/races put on in our own club for us each year, the more chances you get the more likely you'll break it!

I will hopefully step into a 400m in the Graded Meets over the summer if the timetable falls the right way for me, I did a 59:xx first lap in one of the 800m races last summer so should be doable alright! I remember that race in particular because I was swimming in lactate for the last 250m, and it was my first time to really experience that feeling. It was at the Morton Games, but thankfully way before the real action kicked off, so there wasn't much of a crowd to see me falling backwards at a rate of knots & hobbling home :o

5k posted at Malahide Parkrun a few weeks back. A fair bit off my PB but I'll be having a crack at trying to beat 18:00 the weekend after next.

New PB at Raheny 5 miler last weekend. Very pleased to surprisingly duck under the 30 minute mark.

Good start to the year, having cracked the 40 minute 10k barrier on New Years Eve. Pity I can't include that here. I'll have to try again :D

There seems to be a distinct pattern to all the races that you describe, my anonymous Crusader's clubmate ;). Maybe you should try changing up your tactics for the next time:).

Looking forward to a good showdown in the mile or the 3k in the graded meets over the summer if you are adequately recovered from your excursion.

A couple of updates from yesterday. Ran a 400m and an 800m on the same day (a new experience). In the 400m I managed my second fastest time ever, though just under half a second down on the PB. Then a few hours later I recorded my second best 800m time ever, and fastest afternoon 800m (makes a big difference here). I think 2:12 is on but yesterday wasn't the day to do it, after having already run an 400m. Good to experience trying those 2 events in one day though.

Ahh.. The Galen Rupp strategy! Run another race/session before the legs have had a chance to stiffen up! Maybe you should knock out a decent 400m and in the afternoon, give the marathon another shot? :) That's a decent 800m under the circumstances.

Given that these thread is aimed at discussion might be an idea to highlight how you coped with two races that far apart. I have doubled up a few times but majority of these were closer together so was a case of staying warm between.

Did you cool down and warm up again as you would normal would or approach it differently?

Yeh I cooled down after the 400m. A short jog and some stretching. Nothing major. Temperatures only reached 29 in the end but were forecasted for 35 so I wanted to stay out of the heat. I jokingly asked one of the AV staff was there anywhere to find aircon, and to ky surprise she offers me a spare room beside where they were doing the photo finish, with a great view overlooking the finish line. So I sat there for 2 hours, watching some of the other events and ate some lunch. I was pretty lucky and I think they took pity on me a bit. About an hour before my 800m I came back out and joined my clubmates in the stands, and then warmed up again with my sprinter warm up, but not as fast with the strides.

Decent run out in Enniscorthy 10k today. 30 seconds stripped from the PB, so happy with that result. Hoping that once I get a little deeper into my 5k training a shot at a 33:xx may become a realistic prospect. I've also found that the hill and flat sprints are giving me better finishing speed - hopefully something that will lend itself towards the 400m target (though probably not specific enough to take off the 2.5 seconds I need to shave off).

800m last night at the Vic Milers Club meet. Came second in my race, but frustratingly missed my PB by 0.7 seconds. The wind was extremely strong which definitely cost me a new PB I feel, but at least it's my second best run I've managed.

Second 800m in 40 hours, this time after running a 200m, and I managed a slight improvement on the previous run. Half a second down on the PB, but second fastest run, and third time going 2:15. That's my last 800m race for the season, but there's a chance I'll get a paced time trial once State Championships is over to try nail a 2:12.

An improvement on my 2014 400m best by 0.09 seconds. Interestingly it didn't happen in the race I expected. I ran the Victorian Championships 400m last Friday all geared towards running a 54, and only managed 55.56. The next day I came back for the Victorian Decathlon Champs, and after 4 other events in the legs managed to go faster. Funny how things work out. My second fastest time ever so have to be happy with that.

I've attached my race report of day 1 of the decathlon for anybody interested.

Never let it be said that I don't give the longer distances the occasional bash. :) While not a mile, the 1500m gives a good indication of current potential over the distance. Ran the 1500m at the end of the the decathlon last weekend and managed a 4:52.06, which was a 12 second improvement on the same event last year. Interesting improvement off 400m training and zero mileage.

This result equates to 5:15 for the mile. Maybe some day in the distant future I may move up.

Time to start my 2014 attempt on these.
Best I can hope for is to complete the 7-8 shortest ones.
800m was Athlone indoor masters and the 5K a local hilly (slow) one.
