Hi you guys. I'm 23 and looking to go college in Dublin as a mature student next sept. Thing is I have a 2 (will be three) year old son. I'm a single mother on one parent family and don't receive any maintenance. I currently live in Carlow and am in receipt of rent allowance along with my OPF. I need help, is it actually possible for me to uproot and move to Dublin with my son whilst I get a most desired degree and get off friggin' social welfare!! Any help I could get on the following would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
      - Can I still receive my rent allowance and just change over to Dublin? - Is there any help/Free childcare schemes ect? - Any help from the colleges DIT/NCAD on this matter? - Any transport allowances if I were to travel up everyday? PLEASE HELP! Yours sincerely 23 year old in desperate want of an education :(

    Hi Helbell2,

I`m currently in my first year of a nursing degree and I have a 4 year old daughter. I moved back to my parents to study. You can go on the "Back to education allowance" which would enable you to keep your rent allowance. However that is only for the academic year. If you get SUSI grant you lose ur rent allowance but you keep your OPF payment. Have you looked into schemes in creches that allow you to avail of reduced childcare costs because you are in receipt of a social welfare payment. My childcare is 35€ for 5 days a week 9-6. (She is usually out by 3 most days cus my parents pick her up)
Your best bet is to ring citizens advice explain your situation and they can point you in the right direction :) hope some of this helps :)

Sorry but doesn't Carlow have a decent IT, would it not make more sense to apply there, apologies if the college doesn't offer your course, but I didn't see in your post where it mentioned what you would like to do, I have a friend who was doing an engineering degree whilst employed by the army in Carlow IT and he really enjoyed it.
