In the bottom left of my picture you can see a bit of a plinth, on top of that plinth is a statue/sculpture which recognises the significance of that particular spot.

Looks like it could be the battle of the two estates separated by the big green in the middle and they put up the wooden fence and metal barrier to keep them apart hmmmmmmm

It does look like the Chatsworth estate alright (Shameless)
Somebody will know this soon enough I'd say, the event that took place on that patch of ground will surprise some people but it was truly momentous, there isn't anybody who can claim it is dubious this time.

    Correct.

It's next door to the hurling field. It's a long time since I was in Birr but I think that memorial must be new. Travelling from Athlone to Cork many years ago , I stopped there with a Canadian hitchhiker of Ukrainian descent to see Offaly play Wexford in the league. He was enthralled, and busy with his movie camera.
Take it away. I can't do pics.

Why didn't they just use the hurling pitch next to it? :)

To paraphrase an old soldier I once knew, the present hurling pitch wasn't yet foaled at that time.
