I missed this on TI at the time but feel it deserves a thread on the back of a great race last year.
I've just become aware that Tri an Mhi are offering big prize money for 2014.

    http://www.trianmhi.com/index.php/cxiii-2014

I raced this half ironman last year and had a great experience.
It had a great reputation already and the course is challenging and rewarding.
Well located, good timing for most and a hard day of racing on offer.

In my opinion there were only 2 negatives from last years race as follows:

    - timing/temp issues during mid May (communication a bit on this too)

    - No prize money other than sponsors vouchers. I mentioned this in a tweet before xmas also as for a NC race felt it was an issue that needed addressing.
Turns out same day it had been addressed but I missed the pr and TI post on it.

Now for 2014 the race has been put back a few weeks to June 7th so should allow warmer temps and a full swim god willing.

However for me the far more impressive change is the intro of what I would class as great prize money.

So for me, both negatives completely addressed and should make for a great domestic 70.3 race early season.

For a Non NS and Non NC race this is setting the bar high and looks like Tri an Mhi want to have a reputable race with competitive and full fields too.

I know the top 3 podium finishers from last year have this race firmly in their sites and many more no doubt.
Bambaata is also due in for our first head to head battle at last too hopefully.

So just wanted to pay respect for Tri an Mhi and addressing improvements and hopefully setting up a superb early season race.

    - not sure if CR prize is based on 2013 shortened swim course or times from 2012 and before full swim.

    They're also giving 50 to 1st, 40 to 2nd and 30 to 3rd in all AG categories.

    +1

Fair play to them for addressing the shortfalls of last years race, which itself was a very well run event, despite water temperature issues and shortened swim.

Its a class course , hopefully the weather gods will give organisers a break this year.

Looking forward to the head to head. Ive hit every session since the challenge was set (all 3 of them!) so long may it continue and if i do nail them i should be ok with 4 odd months to put up some sort of fight :)

Anyone know when it is due to open for entries. I was looking yesterday but couldn't find anything.

I have to presume someone with a username of a shop is joking when giving out about either commercialism or Christmas?

thanks for posting fazz Its a great honest course

did they increase the entrance fee a lot ? if yes than maybe you have a point, if not than it would show actually more sharing of the profit pie so I would suggest you call it communism ;-)

Fair play to the race organisers. Brave move. Pity it's not a NS race after making two big changes (date + prize money). TI should be rewarding this type of move from the organiser next year.

Might try and squeeze this race in now.

Tri -Limits Half and the National Sprint Champs on the same weekend will be wide open now ;)

I'd comment on all this but not sure I want to deal with the vitrol I received last time I dared to comment on this race.

Not that I expect to be taking home any prize money, but I've just registered for this. It's possible it will be my first tri after Connemarathon. So in at the deep end.

Does this race sell out early? Cheers

It's been open a while now. I couldn't tell you if it will sell out, but I don't think it did last year.

Stupid question . What's the time limit on the swim .??

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,359 ✭✭✭peter kern

had a look at this y day only 211 entries for what i think is a fantstic race given the price money and low entrance fee
at the top end looks like there is a lot of patient guys waiting last second or have hidden entries ;-)

    It's the latter Peter.. ;)

Shane scully may be out due to recent ras injuries, but the two top steps from last year are both returning I believe and are in great shape so it will be competitive.
Course record highly likely to be taken too I'd imagine.

No doubt a few others hidden as well like you say so it will be a good benchmarker.

Full swim likely too as 14 degrees confirmed last week so fingers crossed and all that.

    Aren't you tempted yourself...???

Stupid question . What's the time limit on the swim .??

Distance of swim can depend on the water temperature but there are time limits assuming full distance swim goes ahead:

    Maximum stay in water

    Age groupers
    300m 20 min.
    750m 30 min.
    1500m 1h 10 min.
    3000m 1 h 40 min.
    4000m 2 h 15 min.

I am out of this one anyway. Currently enduring disaster season number 2. Not happy to be missing it as I would love to support it. Gonna try and get back for Kilkee but will be taking a beating there.

It makes me sad seeing a club that is trying its best to put on a good race not attracting huge numbers (still a decent turn-out though), when the likes of Lough Cutra get a big crowd. Just shows you what NS does for a race.

Best of luck Ian and the rest of ye taking part.

Did Tri an Mhi apply for NS status this year? (Genuine question. I'd be extremely surprised/disappointed if they had applied and not received it based on the quality of the race they have put on in recent years).

did you not say the same last year and then blitzed kilkee ? so it looks like all is going well for your kilkee race ;-) i hope you get well soon.

And I agree i hope they get many last minute entries for a race that has been well run for the last 3 years.
Having been on the course the surface of the bike course has been improved at some parts, for those who see this as a deal breaker for a race and water is a good bit warmer than last year, for the people that worry aobut the water temperature.

Ha, I wouldn't call 5th place and finishing a mile behind the top 2 blitzing Kilkee!! My time was quite slow when you consider it was a short swim. two years ago is when I had a good (injury free) one there. I shouldn't have raced last year as it put me out for the rest of the season - hate missing that race though. I will be decent again this year but I am looking for more than just decent at races. I have done one competitive triathlon in almost 2 years so can't expect much in what will be my first race back! If I can peak for August I will be happy.

Back on topic - support this race!

    .

only 100 did the half at cutra though, this has double that? always going to be a smaller pool when you go up in distance, until you hit the big one and put an IM brand on it

Posted about this a while ago. Why have all the half im distance races close together. 3 in 3 weeks if u county athy double. Then in august same again. If the race is only half - ie no other distances) u should put it on away from other races. I am doing 2 half distance this yr and would have done another if better spread out. Nothing at the end of sep from memory which would be perfect timing and prob pick up a few doing oly dist and wanting to try a bit longer

Has anyone any good lake temperature info? How much warmer than last year?
Long term forecast looks fine for next Sat.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread for this but looking for some advice from people who have done this course and distance before. I've managed to win an entry for this, had never planned to do the race and all my training has been for Olympic distance. In saying that I'd be confident I can get around the course but just wondering if there is anything to look out for on the course? Can see one big climb on each lap of the bike but just wondering if there is anything else on it or the run course.

Just curious about nutrition as well, I know it's different for everyone but what number of gels or other stuff would people use during this? Nutrition wouldn't be my strong point and I usually take 1, if any gels during an Olympic distance, don't think I'd get away with that over this distance though.

    Thanks for the help.

The half distance isn't all that different imo, take a bit more nutrition on bike and that's about it.
I do think run strength is noticeable though as on tired legs a half marathon is never going to be easy.

I take 1 x powerbar in the first 10km out of T1, then sip on water/gel combo throughout race. Maybe a total of 4 x gels on bike max diluted.
And about 700mls of hi 5 or equivalent also.
If it's hot I may refill with another bottle of hi 5.

On run, very much dependent on what you can stomach and need.
I've tried taking a gel every 20-30mins, and also ran just taking 1 x gel also.
Hard to tell a difference really, I personally more feel it down to leg strength and fitness as opposed to nutrition bonking.

Regarding the course, yes the bike is mainly rolling with the 1 x short climb each lap. Some longer drags in the first third of each lap, and mainly flat in the last third but susceptible to winds if there are any.

Run course is hard. flat ish the first 3 or so km, then loop done twice which is not easy. slow drag up and down and up each lap, and for me the toughest part then is the last 4km or so as seems to be on an incline for most of the way and legs will feel it.

    Can't wait! :pac::pac::pac:

I haven't raced here before, but I recced the bike course on Saturday. The left turn before that climb is quiet sharp and you approach it at speed. I imagine marshals will be in place to warn people to slow down on Saturday, but it'd be important to be in the right gear coming round the turn. I'm not going to try getting up that hill in my big ring, I'd still be comfortable for the first few hundred metres but I don't think I'd lose too much in the way of power if I was to drop down to the small ring coming down the hill before that left turn. Will know exactly what to do after the first lap I guess.

You'd want more than one gel for a half iron distance race. 4.5+ hours is a long time to be on the go, it'd be possible to get through the bike, but if you haven't been fuelling it'll hit you on the run. Even the mighty Lance Armstrong struggled with nutrition on his first few Ironman 70.3. I'll be having jellies, a banana, and a sports drink before the start, 6 gels taped to my bike, 2/3 more gels to take out on the run. I think you should take calories on board whether you feel like it or not. Bonking is a far worse feeling than having ingested too many gels and not being able to stomach them.
