bigger car will end up costing more to run.

Not always, it can often depend on the type of driving. Waterford to Kilkenny is mostly Motorway, I'd much rather be sat in a C-segment car than a B-segment. I reckon fuel economy would be very close if not bett in the C-Segment on motorway runs.

I just quickly went through donedeal.ie and found this: http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/2001-ford-fiesta-1-2-petrol-ghia-model/6165979
Which is from a dealer so probably will come with an warranty of some sort and it looks decent. Asking price is only 1.100 is this a a good deal?
And with corollas I couldn't find decent deal, they're all either a lot older than I expected or ntc is almost out, etc.
Id still be going for a corolla. It's a much superior car to those fiestas. That model fiesta suffers from severe rust underneath. At this stage you'd rarely see a rust free example.

if a fiesta is a must then the newer model is the way to go. It's a much better car than the old model and doesn't suffer from the dreaded rust.

18 year old me would go for a focus. It is a class above the likes of a fiesta. I personally wouldn't have gone near the class below. The focus wouldn't cost much more than a fiesta nor would the insurance change much. You would need the 1.6 however to have any comfort for traveling, which would be slightly heavier on petrol and tax. You will be needing some sort of comfort when covering that kinda mileage.

I was in your shoes a few years back. I got insured on my parents 1.4 astra for a few months at a time, e.g over the summer which worked out quite costly, around €100 a month. I always wanted a tdi car, didn't really care what it was so long as it was tdi, a huer to insure and tax but ya can't help what ya want.

Anyways last summer I turned 21 and bought my first car, seat leon 1.9tdi-lovely car, got a fair deal. I decided to start out on my own policy-€2000 fully comprehensive was the cheapest on a car worth under 6k. Despite at this stage having my full licence over 3 years, and being on my parents policy, I hadn't built up any consecutive years driving, even though my driving experience was on and off, id say totalled 18mths. After my 1st year, it came down to €1100. All with Axa.

My advise, start out with a wee clean car around €1000, tax 3rd party, get your no claims built up and then after a year or so, change up to something dearer. Unless your a fussy car fanatic like me who wouldn't settle for anything 1.0l

Everyone has to ride the insurance premium wave at some stage whether your 18 or 24, so sooner the better! Happy hunting!

The Fiesta is a great choice but get someone who has an idea of cars to go with you. Some Fiestas suffer from awful rust problems.

Yeah some of those 2000-2002 ford fiestas are red-rotten around the rear arches. Metal must have been really poor quality.

I wouldn't even consider buying from a dealer in this price range as they tend to be someone else's muck that was just traded in. I also wouldn't hold my breath on any warranty from them either as at this end of the market there is no profit in offering warranty.
