Amazing when you put classics and modern together that what you thought was a 'large' car of yesteryear is actually dwarfed by the modern stuff.
New Mondeo (Cortina class descendant ? ) is actually bigger than a Granada.
Renault Clio (5 descendant ) is bigger than an 18
......and as for 'tribute' cars such as Mini / Beetle

Apparently a lot of it down to focus groups ( when fiesta drivers asked what they'd like in new model, they want it a little bigger,) over several new models the fiesta ends up bigger that escort/focus the granada gets ditched and the ka takes the fiesta's position...

    VW Golf 1; 3705mm
    VW Golf II; 3985mm
    VW Golf VII; 4255 mm

    VW Polo V; 3952 mm

    Passat I: 4190mm
    Passat VII: 4770mm

    Merc W116 : 4960mm

Present Polo is longer than the 80's Golf.
Present Golf is longer then the original Passat.
Present Passat is just 19cm shorter than a 70's S-Class.

I parked my 1974 Rover 3500 parallel to a VW Golf a while back, and the Rover seemed small as I cast a look back. I checked dimensions and weights for each with auto boxes……

    Rover: 4572 long, 1676 wide, 1422 high, 1298 kg.
Golf (current): 4255 long, 1799 wide, 1452 high, 1395 kg.

The Golf is wider, taller and heavier. The Rover is just over a foot longer, and manages to be 97kg lighter!

I have noticed that older purpose-built car parks have become tighter in recent years as cars have expanded.

My 'big' Datsun 200L looks hilariously small when parked beside modern stuff.

Along Francis St there's marked parking bays near Carman's Hall that are about 1' narrower than any current car - needless to say, EVERY car space in the state is now really too small considering the cars ( and their drivers  ) have increased in size :P

I used to think my old B1 Audi 80 was a big "executive"-ish car of it's time until I parked it between a modern-day Ford Fiesta Fusion and Focus...

My 2012 Passat is taller, wider, heavier and faster than my W126 300 SE Mercedes S Class ..... and that was a big car back in the day!

I was in an underground car park recently and saw this sign beside a free spot. I took the challenge...

That new model mini is one of the ugliest things to taint our roads. I make a point of looking disgusted every time I see one in the hope the driver sees me and realises their folly.

    Great thread, btw. :)

I'm a little surprised at that one, I don't think the new one is as much bigger than some of the smaller ones like the 500 or mini. If it keeps up that pace in 20 years time a 500 will be bigger than the rangey.

I parked my '90 Corolla next to a Dacia Sandero the othe day and the size difference was shocking. Also, I never realised how much space I can have in a parking space with the older car compared to my last Mondeo!!
