I brought my 2 year old son to the doctors on Monday 6th of Jan and he was clearly sick, bad cough, runny nose, not eating...just not himself. The doctor gave him the all clear after a half assed examination. I paid, although not happy and left.
My son then got worse over the next day, thinking he would get better himself as the doctor had said.
We brought him back to the doctors on Wednesday 8th of Jan to be told that he had a very bad throat infection leading into an ear infection.

Anyways, we had to pay the €50 AGAIN for the appointment. Am I wrong in saying that you don't pay again if a child is brought back in with the same problems that weren't spotted at the first appointment? The receptionist said that's only if its the following day (ie Monday to Tuesday). I wasn't fully convinced, paid and left. Only to be told, twice since, that what they did is in fact illegal.

Does anyone know what the story is with this procedure?

Totally depends on your doctor and their policy on repeat visits.

It's not illegal. It's a bit rich though, really.
Each practice had its own policies.

To be honest I would be very annoyed at this. Perhaps speak to the doctor yourself and tell him/her that you don't think you should have been charged again as this was a follow on visit due to the same problem only 2 days before which hadnt been diagnosed. Reiterate you think it's a bit ridiculous being charged twice for the same problem. There is absolutely no point saying this to the receptionists as they only follow the normal practice policies and instructions. If the doc is unavailable to take your call at the time. Firmly request he/she calls you back as you are unhappy.

Now of course the doc might not give you a refund. But it would be good practice to. Especially if you've been attending the same practice for a while.

Our GP has a sign up at reception detailing charges (I try not to look at the medical card ones, as they make me cry).
Repeat visits within the same week are usually free for us, with 25 euro for repeat visit after that.

Did the doctor themselves charge you this, or the receptionist? sometimes the receptionist isn't away that it's a repeat.
