Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I have the Merriam Webster Encylcopedia of Literature which is pretty good in that regard, and also includes references to literary terms etc as well as brief bios of authors and accounts of major works.

A good reference works on 20th c writers is The Salon.com Reader's Guide to Contemporary Authors.

And one I got for Christmas is John Sutherland's Lives of the Novelists, a History of Fiction in 294 lives which gives lively biographical mini essays extending from Daniel Defoe up to Stephen King and Martin Amis. (It does confine itself to English language writers though).
