I'm interested in finding out more about the history of a house we are thinking of buying. It's in Dublin 7 - just a small artisan cottage - but I'd like to have an idea of how many owners it has had, when it was built, etc.

I'm from the U.S. and this kind of this is relatively straightforward at a local deed registry / property registry office.

Any ideas as to how I'd go about doing it in Dublin? I'm not really even sure what the office would be called to google it.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Is this what you're looking for?

You wont have access to the deeds and this detail wont be of public record here you would need a solicitor to access the data via the PRAI www.landregistry.ie (if infact they are allowed to even do this) even then it may or may not have a full record if its a small artisan cottage as full records may not be available.

Kind of struggling to understand why how many owners the property has had is of importance though ? I mean its a house not a car.

Re build date have you asked the EA ? He / she may be able to answer that particular question for you.

    Here.
    2. What information is available in the Land Registry?
Names Index: A record of the names and addresses of every Registered Owner.
The index is kept in respect of each county and shows the folio number(s) corresponding to the name.
Folio: This is a part of the register with its own distinct number on which details of the property, its ownership and any burdens affecting it appear.
Map: Original Ordnance Survey and other maps with all registered property delineated thereon are maintained in the Registry.

    And here.
Names Index, folio and map can be inspected by anyone on payment of the prescribed fee.

The census for 1901 and 1911 is publically available http:// http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie which might give some detail. I know some of the cottages around Stoneybatter were built between the two.
