Not actually sure if it's something you're expected to pay for or do people just give them away? The only cat I ever had was given to me as a kitten by a family friend.

Most shelters charge an adoption fee of in and around €50 per kitten but for this you'l get a wormed, vaccinated and neutered (or a neutering voucher to use when the kitten is old enough) healthy kitten.

If you look on private ads you'l see plenty of free to good home kittens but chances are most (but not all) of them will not have been wormed, vaccinated or neutered (neutering alone is about €50 for a female or €30 for a male), it won't have seen a vet so it may not be healthy and it may have been reared in a shed so will be pretty skittish. Some people charge a small fee such as €10 or €15 to deter chancers and people who may want a small animal for undesirable circumstances.

Wait a few months and the country will be flooded with kittens, not all of them will go to good homes and quite a few will end up dumped to turn feral or dead. The most important thing about getting a cat regardless of gender is getting it neutered so it can't reproduce more kittens into an already flooded market.

Are you looking to get a cat/kitten?

OP there are a number of rescues stickies at the top of the page
Most if not all will have cats/kittens looking for homes
If you let us know where you are based and what kind of cat (age/sex) someone here may be able to help?
