Just wondering does anybody know what Norwegian red male calves are like to rear? Are better or worse than holsteins? Thanks!

Similar to holstein, with a value that's similar to jersey cross

If they hadnt started shipping the FR calves so early this year there would have being a good market for them. Typical local crowd working on farmers behalf :rolleyes:couldnt wait for a few weeks. High seas is currently a problem and there are little livestock getting on board the ferries due to restrictions.

I seen a good few he being sold between 160-360. aa anything from 90 to 260 didnt see as many. I cant see any of the higher priced ones leaving much behind them. i was in cootehill friday night and 165-200kg he heifers selling from 320 -400 for a suckled one. would these not be a far better option with a lot of the problems behind them.

Cannot understand calf prices at times. The prices paid for coloured calves is often crazy .. Those light suckler heifers are way better value. This time next year they are capable of being 500kgs while the coloured calf might be o350at the best.

That's a good price this year for the fr bulls. We sold 20 in the yard for €65 waiting for bvd to clear and bye bye

Mahoney, why dont you get into sucklers if calf price is so important?:D

I'm thinking of putting a nice Charolais bull on the cows this year and reaping in the 500 bucks for them next year!!!.
Seriously though I will argue with any man that a bull calf is more than a by product in a system.i have 12 nice hi ebi feb 13 born bulls to sell for breeding over the next 6 weeks.sold one already for 2k.sone bi product!!

Went to Carrigallen on Saturday to see how calf prices were. Very young plain FR bulls (navel cords still attached) were making €75 to €85. Slightly older bulls were making from €120 to €180. A good type BrFR bull about 5 weeks old made €270!!

Coloured heifer calves made from €320 up depending on age. There were some nice CH heifer calves off milk that made €380. I didn’t take note of what prices coloured bull calves made.
A few black JEx black bull calves about a month old made €120!!
4 black Jex bulls about a year old sold for €250. One was very Jersey like but the other 3 were not as bad.
Best value in my opinion was bought by a neighbour in the weanling ring. He picked up two FR bulls that were very much in their winter working clothes, as in they were not done well but had a bit of shape to them. One was 260 odd kgs and the other was 290 kgs, he got one for €210 and the other for €220.
