How could you tell the difference between an Angus from a Friesan and an Angus from a Jersey?

There's no hiding those jersey heads! Also most are fairly brown

40 euro out of the yard would be a decent price sadly considering the effort of getting them sold in mart .. last 2 wks stank at mart

Things are sliping fast as Fresian yearling are struggling at around 1.2/kg and this is the start of the grazing season

    sold 11 today mart 3x jerseys 20 euros 2 fr 45. 2x80 2x100 and aa at 115

    At Thurles today
    6 Fresians av 110
    2 AA bulls av 205
    2 AA heifers av 195
    2 He bulls av 250
    All 3-4 weeks old

I haven't been to a mart in a few years, usually sell out of the yard. To be honest I was very down beat going over there, with all the talking down of calf prices. Am happy with those prices.

Yea,It's a great mart. Cashel would be my local but prefer Thurles much more. I didn't book in, last time I was there, there was no need to book in, so the calves were later in the sale. I just dropped and went, they rang me later with the prices, great spot.

    I'd say about 350-400.
There was over 200 lots and alot of them were doubles and some trebles.

Was a bad write up in Saturday's independent about jersey calves been sold in cork marts for as low as €2. Is it even worth tagging these???

I suppose it's only right the consumer knows the full story behind modern milk production.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,879 ✭✭✭mf240

I think ye all give the consumer to much credit, as long as it tastes ok and it's cheap the large majority of them don't care any further.

    wh bull $250 4 weeks

    bb 200
    he 270
    he 255
    he 235
    bb 300
    bb 300
    he 280
    all heifers.
all nice and big. was 450-500 calves. 95% fr bulls. i think my bunch werent to bad considering there was so little variety.
white heads where a bit pricey but there was only i say 15 on offer. bb were a good price.
freisans were v slow to shift. bids of 2 euro at a time etc. avg 60-80.
saw 1 jex it didnt get a bid.
not many farmers out either i didnt think.
would of bought another 10 but it was all friesans after that or tiny angus

I like to buy the fr as weanings or yearlings, easier to spot the hol in them.
i have 60 of them in the shed 2 year old.
tbh im worried what way the factories are going to go. hard to get them to the right condition under 30 months.
    never had bulls here.
who knows what it will be like in 2 years to get animals killed.

Fair point, see where your coming from, two week old calves looking good on day of sale can often turn into c&@ts, I know from experience with a couple

A.lot of poor quality calves in it today and has to be one of the slowest sales in Ireland and as for the guy selling like a back pocket in a vest or an ash tray on a motor bike.

have 6 fr bull calves 4 of them are good, exporter only giving 40 euro out of yard, would ye bring them to mart or take the 40 euro?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,847 ✭✭✭Brown Podzol

    no harm

Not unless all the resulting jersey cows are going to have jersey heifer calves. Extrapolate and the country would be covered in Jersey cows.
