Having the O'Haras barrel aged barley wine this evening.
Decidedly meh. Surprisingly watery and not much taste of anything from it. :(

O'Hara's don't seem to be up to much outside their mainstay beers, lately.

Not beer but baileys deluxe with belgian chocolate. €15 in Tesco and very tasty.

Drinking a 200 fathoms at the moment. Lovely lovely beer.
The whiskey aging isn't over the top (which I find it can be with some barrel aged beers), just gives it that extra dimension to a great stout underneath it all.

Had a Duckstein on draught last night.

Gorgeous beer. One of the better German beers I've had. Lovely and rich.

Finally! Carraig Dubh, from Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne/West Kerry Brewery. Feck all carbonation in this bottle, but lovely flavours.

Is this available in Dublin anywhere other than drinkstore? Had it on cask last year in WJK's and loved it. Had a few bottles brought up from the deep south last week and it's still beautiful from the bottle. Drinkstore seem to have a horrible nack for sticking a good 20% onto the price of everything they sell :(

Has anyone ever had any if the Bock style beers, are they just stronger than average lagers?

I got mine from Drinkstore. It's not easy to find the stuff in north Munster either!

I also threw a Porterhouse Oyster Stout into my order, and I'm enjoying that now with the wrestling on TV. :D

Just out of interest, how much of a margin should they put on the stuff they sell? Assuming your figure of 20% is correct of course.

I got myself a Hirschbrau Doppel Hirsch on Saturday, it's bloody amazing, especially for a Malt-head like myself. The smell from the glass was amazing - properly like a bag of Malteasers! So, so good.

My recent tastes as I look to try various ales were Hobgoblin and King Goblin, the special version of it, by Wychwood.

I enjoyed them both but prefer the Hobgoblin !

Everything is more expensive in dublin than the country. I find drinkstore to be one of the best for price in dublin.

I wouldn't bother drinking it again. Actually, it's right up there with some of the most disappointing beers I've had in the last while.
And to top it all off, it gave me a fierce pain in my gut. I poured the remnants of it down the sink, couldn't finish it. :(

I got a 6-pack of Founder's dry-hopped pale ale on Saturday - very meh. Also Kinnegar's limeburner, pretty similar reaction, first of their beers I haven't really liked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,748 ✭✭✭✭Lovely Bloke

Limeburber was the first Kinnegar I tried, and it put me off trying anything else of theirs for ages.

It's just a bland golden ale. Like all Golden Ales - they are very good for lager drinkers looking for an "in" to Craft Beers, so they do have their place.

Limeburner is extremely bland alright. Had scraggy bay on draught though and thought it was much better. Nice strong burst of hops in it, and a much fuller flavour

Funny, I would never have considered it to be one of the cheapest places in Dublin. The prices always looked high to me.

Do tell, which craft beer off licence is cheaper?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

Almost always found Drinkstore to be cheaper than anywhere I've seen in Dublin for most beers, anyway. I'm not counting Supermarket deals, which are great, but not fair to compare.

I suppose it depends on what you want to buy and where you are. I tend to shop around as I shop in a number of off-licences around Dublin, depending on where I find myself. I can, for example, buy a number of Brew Dog products in the local off-licence for less than Drinkstore's online price and with a 6 for 5 offer.

Depending on the week/month I've found Devenney's to have very reasonable offers. Sometimes they don't appeal, of course, and their regular prices can be quite high if there are no offers but I've often found myself buying stuff there - 5 bottles of Left Hand stout for €2.20 each comes to my mind.

Redmonds often have offers for American craft beers - 4 for €11ish - though I will admit that I haven't been there for a couple of months. Last time I was in the local O'Briens they had lots of craft beers on offer.

In my experience, if you want to find special offers on the Drinkstore website you have to either buy in bulk or buy items that are either out of date or close to it. Perhaps I've been missing the low prices though. I do check the website relatively frequently but I will concede to anyone else's superior knowledge.

When I buy online I expect prices to be lower. It compensates me for now being able to browse the good in person. For a business with a strong online presence the prices seem pretty standard and often without the combination offers I like so much. Without lower prices - in fact, unless you live close by you pay more once you factor in postage - the online side is unattractive to me. Without offers it just ends up being a standard off-licence that isn't necessarily cheaper than my local. By no means the most expensive place in Dublin but not the cheapest.

I've bought from them before - very nice people working there and a good selection, albeit quite chaotic and lacking clearly indicated prices in the bricks and mortar shop.

I'm sorry I can't provide you with more solid data. It all comes from memory. I live close enough to it but rarely go - there's a reason. Some of this may be due to impressions but I have at least attempted to explain my point of view.

I frequent Remonds and Baggot street offy often enough, and tend to use drinkstore for an idea of price.

I've only seen this offer with the Founder beers. They have had some Tuatara and Epic beers at a good price, but that was only because they were old I'd say. Brewdog have been on sale for 2.50 a bottle, not sure why they did that though as they are relatively fresh.

I've seen Redmonds and Baggot street charge 6.70 and 6.35 for Of Foam and Fury, compared to drinkstore's 5.70. Also seen Nogneo sunturnbrew costing 20 euros in Baggot and Deveney's, but drinkstore charge 8 euros for it. Also that new Vian DIPA is costing 9.30 in Redmonds versus 4.30 in Drinkstore.

Seems to me, that shops like donnybrook fair and superquinn are best for deals, then drinkstore for general pricing. Redmond's, Baggots, and Deveney's seem to add a euro onto the price when they can

When im in an offie i will now check the onlin drinkstore price as a comparison to being ripped off (i also buy from DS). I wouldnt go comparing offers from one to regular DS prices though.

I just don't think it's the cheapest place in Dublin. As always, it's best to shop around.

If someone knows what the cheapest place is in Dublin then do share!

There's no one cheapest place, it depends on what you're looking for. I think when it comes to variety and price Drinkstore is on par, if not better, than most places.

Well if you're a Beoir member the 10% discount on Irish beer and cider in Drinkstore will nearly always make them cheapest for Irish beers. If Redmond's and Deveny's started a similar scheme I'd shop there more.

The Wrasslers for a euro in Drinkstore at the moment and the deal of last year the crate of Modus Hoperandi, makes me keep an eye on them more often. But I generally just shop where I'm near to be honest.

Of foam and fury is 7.95 in redmonds, well was on the weekend anyway. Insanity! I used to like redmonds but more and more I find there prices had to justify compared to prices in other off licences.

Hehe, it was a complete exaggeration, sorry :)

I was just a bit pissed off when I went into the shop assuming that the higher prices on the site reflected postage costs and ended up paying 60c extra for bottles of McGraths Red compared to Supervalu.

You arent really comparing like for like.

Supervalu have the power of Musgraves bulk buying behind them, Drinkstore is a single specialist shop. There are hundreds of beers available from Drinkstore that you will never see in Supervalu. Also, the place delivers a personal service which is second to none.

Besides, Aldi have that value craft end tied up with the O'Sheas range from Carlow.

Yeah, I completely jumped the gun. Sorry for that.

If nothing else has come of all of this, I am now signing up for a beoir membership and dragging as many people as will heed my facebook spam along with me :)
