Club Tropicana a Berliner Weiss with exotic fruits from Mad Hatter. Sour, Fruity. Lovely

    Was it free?

Ha Ha. Actually it was free. A box of samples from the brewery. Drinking a raspberry and basil wit now.

    Any salt?

    None that I could tell.

Dunnes. It's all their beers incl Rocketship.

I'm not a huge fan of Blacks, too inconsistent.

I got all excited because I do love the Black IPA but I'm kinda boycotting Dunnes.

    Sounds delightful.

I'm getting stuck into a litre growler of Siren Calypso.

Berliner Weisse is my new favourite beer style.

Just to mix it up that my meat wagon does a tasty board of meat. €18 for the mixed platter and you get two sides

    Best beef rib I've had.

Anyway walked it off down to brewdock got me a 8 ball, Dark Penance(this was ughh, not fresh at all) and Nitro Milk stout

Something being filmed upstairs, not exactly sure who it was for.

Had a Weird Beard Something Something Dark Side last night.

I enjoyed the beer but it didn't blow me away. It's 9.5% and hid that well but possibly too well because I thought it was lacking a bit of bite.

Bit the bullet on the two "special" Guinnesses with Aldi's deal on them. Like their 'craft' lager - they're not bad. They're not exceptional either.

Was given a taste of Liefmans Goudenband by someone who was raving about it at the weekend. I can't see how it possibly justifies its price. Maybe if you're a particular fan of sour beers, but even then its still hideously dear.

A pint of Black's KPA in Kinsale. It would have been rude not to. Having a bottle of Sneaky Owl in Clonakilty

Been a couple of weeks since posted:

Mescan Red Tripel: Decent stuff, first Irish Tripel I have ever had, a bit meatier and less boozey than Belgian styles.
Metalman Windjammer: Had on cask, lovely fresh, tropical fruity stuff! Hope to have a lot more of this one, too bad only cask & draught (MOAR CANS GUYS!).
Black Donkey Sheep Stealer: The first few tastes it seemed a bit twangy but mellowed a bit as it went, ok but not great, doesn't have the kind of smooth, almost creaminess that I like in a farmhouse ale.
Franciscan Well Summer Saison: Great stuff, glad that brewers here are getting heavily into their Saisons this year as it is an awesome and broad style that leaves a whole lot of room for creativity and diversity, again too bad this is only a limited run.
The White Hag Irish Bog Ale: A bit of a wildcard but decent smokey ale right here if you are into that sort of thing.
Tuatar Double Trouble: One of the nicest beers I have had in last few months. Expensive but quality stuff, I don't think it would be possible to cram more hops into a single beer. Not as bitter as purported though (or else my tastebuds had been melted too much :P ) but still the high % ABV is well-hidden. Also a really cool bottle, with reptile-like ridges raised from the glass, wish I had a few crates of these for homebrew!
Brewdog Electric India: Nice beer, decent balance of citrus, herbs and spice.
Brewdog Vagabond Pale Ale: Nice complex beer with a lot of different flavours but not too over-bearing, if you want/need a Gluten Free beer then this is a great choice.
Odell Levity Amber Ale: Decent, caramel and subtle hops, a good few of Odell's other beers are far nicer though.
Founders All Day IPA: Not bad, pretty clean for an IPA, I accidentally bought this when I meant to grab a Centennial! ...Would have much preferred the Centennial...
8° Grand Stretch: Lovely stuff, yet to have an IPA from these guys that was not spot-on and with gobs of fruity hops, nom nom.
Trouble Brewing Equinox S.M.A.S.H: I must admit I was a bit pissed when I had this but recall it being decent enough, flavourful (but not overbearing) and smooth.
White Gypsy Irish Red Ale: Had from cask, bit of a mad indescribable twang to it, not lacticy but something of that ilk, pretty decent stuff and at least a dozen times more interesting than the average bland Irish Red!
Fuller's 1845: Thick portery stuff, nice grainy sweet (but not too sweet) flavour and just the right amount of alcohol in the taste.
Grafter's Pale Ale The first Rye River Brewing beer that I have actually enjoyed and pretty decent value at €1.99.
Grafter's IPA: Not bad, could be a lot hoppier, I prefer their Pale Ale.

That's all I can recall or took note of in the last three weeks anyhow :D

Got a nice delivery this morning :)

Have had a lot of Augustiner Edelstoff and Helles lately too.

Spent a couple of weeks in San Francisco drinking Lagunitas pretty much exclusively. Have to say, I'm much preferring their IPA to Sierra Nevada IPA at least. Only had Sumpin Sumpin after a fair few pints, so it was a bit heavy, but interesting nonetheless.

Anyone try Smithwick's Pale Ale? I noticed it popping up a lot but everything is telling me to avoid it! Curious though.

Also, Punk IPA 500ml cans to be had anywhere here yet?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭Son0vagun

Had The Rhubarb and Custard beer in The Old School House in Sword. It was delicious. Had it after a feed of chicken wings and chips and it was a prefect desert.

Smithwicks PA is ok. It's what I'd drink out if there's no other option apart from the more common macro stuff (Although I am partial to Beamish...). It's not going to excite you too much mind!

I'm sure I saw a Tweet about 500ml Pink but can't find it at the mo. Will look later and get back on.

Came out about a month or two ago but haven't heard if they've made it across the water yet.

I know they're in the country, my local has them. I'm sure DrinkStore, McHughs and the likes have them.

    How much per can?

    I didn't check the price.

Saying 4.09 on their website but out of stock.

Was about to say that's kinda steep but sure it's less than €1 more than a 33cl can and the distributor are notorious for mental prices.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭-=al=-

The normal cans of Punk are about €3 these days, so I suppose €4 for the 500ml are about right. If only you could get a slab at a supermarket price! They used to be a lot cheaper those Punk cans :pac:

Heading down to Body & Soul this weekend so wondering what beers to bring that won't be god awful tripe when warm without spending a fortune on wasted beer potential... Any thoughts? I usually bring a few Tyskie cans to the festivals... Tis cheap enough with a reasonable abv in a 500ml can but I have expensive tastes these days.. Can barely drink the commercial beer anymore

Nothing too hoppy, I don't believe hops & warm mix too well.

Picked up two Spanish beers in Supervalu yesterday. A Barcelona brewery called Barcino Brewers. I've never heard of them.

Got the Gòtic Ale and the Raval IPA. I only tried the Gòtic Ale but I really liked it. Doesn't say on the label what it is but it's listed on Ratebeer as an American Pale Ale. I would've said it more along the lines of a light Amercian Amber. Still nice though.

I think there is an Irish connection with them, one of the brewers maybe

    It would seem so;

    from their FB page
Huzzah! Barcino Beer has landed in Ireland. Look out for us in specialist independent off-licenses, delis and restaurants. More info coming soon! ...Meanwhile here's Cian Desmond, Barcino Head Brewer Extraordinaire, celebrating with Jonny Reid, Brew Dog's European Business Development Manager at Bradley's in Cork. Cheers!
