    Hi Guys

I purchased this blu ray from you last week.

Quick question re the wi-fi on it. The unit is wi-fi ready as opposed to built in so I need a dongle for it.

Do you know if I have to use the Sony UWA-BR100 adapter or will any wireless adapter do.

Big difference in price so I need to know definitatively which one to go for.

Hi and welcome to Boards. Hi Golden.

The players require the specific dongle from the manufacturer as they are coded with information to work with the player.

I didn't know that wifi was a requirement for you or I would have mentioned it.

The best option is to go for the homeplugs as these operate a lot faster than wifi and unless your wifi signal is good, I would always recommend these instead.

These would do the job and are cheaper than the dongle.

The pass through ones if you need the plug are £24.95.

Let me know what you make of these.

    Hi Dave

I had thought the wifi was built in. Wifi ready seems a bit of sharp practice by Sony seeing as you can only use their dongle.

I assume the way they would work is I'd need a cable from my wifi box into the nearest socket - and a cable from the socket near the blu ray into the back of the blu ray.

Is this effectively making the blu ray a wired part of my network?
Will it work on socket extensions?
Would I need two ethernet cables..?
Will it definately work with this blu ray..?
How much for pass through and cables if needed and can they be posted...?

    Golden,

Apologies again for the delay getting back to you and to be fair to Sony - in this case they are the same as all the other manufacturers - some of their units have wifi in their feature set and some don't - you can use a generic dongle with most units however its generally better to use the recommended unit.

However if you cant get an ethernet cable to your router easily - we would really recommend using internet over mains instead of wifi in pretty much all cases where you would like to stream video or reasonable amounts of data as its just so much more stable and of course way, way faster!

We do the TPLink range of extenders and there are several variants from the basic unit which is just £19.95 - the unit we use mainly is the TP251 - this is a unit which has a plug & socket arrangement - ie you don't even require an additional socket as you can plug the unit into your existing socket and then plug your Bluray into the TPlink - a really neat arrangement ( and its the same at the router end).

You will need 2 ethernet cables - they both come supplied with the extender - honestly its WAY better than the wireless alternative!

We can of course post any of these ( the 210 basic unit is £19.95 - the 251 with mains pass thru is £24.95) and postage would be £9.95,

    Thanks again,

    Best regards,
