Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is it just me ...

Is it just me or is it nearly impossible for a first time rider to get insured on anything above a 250cc ?

Im 20 years old, have been driving a 125cc for a year now (Have the NCB). Need a new bike so decided to kill two birds with one stone and get a bike around 400cc so I could do my A2 test on it and not have to rent one out.

While Ive found a few things, Its been next too impossible to get insurance on it. A bike like the fazer 400, which I wouldve thought is a fairly conservative bike choice, none of the online quote systems have quoted me for it.

Can anybody recommend some A2 appropriate bikes ?

Or even if you have any experience with the above ?

Thanks in advance if anybody can help me.

Check out this page on MAG Ireland, http://www.magireland.org/a2-license-facts/

About half way down there should be a list of A2 bikes, search for "This list was updated: 8th March 2012"

I know 250cc seems small compared to 600cc and 1000cc bikes.
but I'm driving a ninja 250 and it is more than fast enough. are you sure a 600 is necessary ? why not save on tires, insurance, tax and fuel?
    (I'm 6'3 and 80kgs).
Before my 250, I had a 125 and i thought that was dirt slow.

Ive seen that list before. Theres a lot of bikes on it which can be restricted to A2, the only problem is that AON (and Im pretty sure about liberty as well) is that they dont acknowledge after market restrictions and Im finding it fairly hard to find a factory restricted bike 2nd hand.

    250cc is fine with me.

It just seems like the smarter thing to buy a 400cc so I wont have to rent out a bike for the test. I know a 250 would be fast enough for me though. (for the moment anyways).

Phone them. With the new licence categories the websites haven't been updated, so getting an accurate quote is not really possible for a bike when you have an A2 licence.

Give them a shout and see what they say.

The 250cc bike should have remained for the A2 test ime, its forcing everyone to get 400cc bikes now.

Once you turn 21 it's easy to get insured on most 600s (except the likes of an r6) at a reasonable price.
