I don't like him for a multitude of reasons, but none more so than the fact - and it is a fact - that he is an astoundingly immoral human being.

I was rather disturbed and upset to see him 'contact the dead' with two willing participants live on the Late Late Show last year without telling them that the trick was complete bullsh*t.

Some of you will be familiar with the method of cold reading, a trick employed by pretty much every psychic in the entire world to fool people into believing that they know intimate details about their punter.

Well, Barry uses the same technique in his trick. "You're concerned about finances Mary, is this right?". It's a recession, and she's wearing rip-off Adidas tracksuit bottoms. "You have lost a loved one in your life Mary, is this right?". Mary is a 64-year-old woman. "Would I be right in saying it's been a while since you've had the ride, Mary?". Mary is also about 23 stone. You get the idea.

Anyways, so he uses this technique on a woman who has indeed lost a very close member of her family. I think her son may have died at a young age, which makes what he does far, far worse because he's playing with real-life issues here. He does that thing with his eyeballs that The Undertaker does and pretends he is speaking directly to this woman's deceased son in heaven, and passing on false messages. "Mary, he wants you to know that he is at peace." She starts balling her eyes out on national television based on the information that Keith Barry sends her.

He benefits from the grief of women like Mary and does not tell them that what he is doing is complete bullsh*t. This is what seperates him from the classier people such as Derren Brown, who often puts emphasis on the fact that he has no mind-reading ability, which he tells people before he starts to 'read' their mind or speak to dead relatives. It's all an act, yet Barry keeps tight-lipped on this fact.

    Scumbag.

    He is not cool.

I remember Derren Brown- he presented magic in a new way, with a 'psychological' slant, and for a while had me going. I believed Derren was some kind of master psychological trickster and manipulator.

And then Keith Barry came along and ruined everything. He ripped off Derren Brown's whole act, right down to the last detail of his television programmes and presentation. I mean sure, we know it's all magic, but at least Derren Brown was fun to watch and was good at what he did. But Keith Barry probably has exactly half Derren Brown's IQ, class and talent. How can Derren continue his act when this other cheap imitator gives the game away that it's all cheap magic tricks. If KB can learn this stuff, anyone can.

Keith Barry, Garth Brooks....wtf is wrong with people!?

Oh and the other thing that gets to me about him is that he's the perfect vehicle for people who think they are smart to lecture others about the 'inside scoop' they have on "Neuro Linguistic Programming" and other such nonsense.

"Ahh, ya see it's not that he has magic powers-- he's influencing ya wi his physcology stuff!"

No, it's just cheap children's magic tricks. Sorry.

Anyone have any links to performances where he might have slipped up?
I'm intrigued by him, curious, but very cynical. I don't understand though how people haven't come forward and admitted to being a plank.

Cant find the clip on you tube, l think it was performed in america a few years ago and something to do with a box, but there was a camera on him from the side and you could see whatever the feck he was doing was not magic.....it was a lie. lt made me think twice about him, but lm curious about how he can read peoples minds, weather its something arranged before hand or not l dont know....but l do think he has some kind of "power" or whatever you'd like to call it :P

Everything is done exactly how he accomplished the psychic surgery on his Brain Hacker show. He sort of let the cat out of the bag. He is talented but it is a huge one trick that works with most things. :)

I really like him or find him very interesting but in fairnes there is no reason why anyone should use words like magic, physic or medium because as far as i am aware he does not claim to be any of those things. As far as i know he describes himself as a "mentalist".

I dont think they are paid stooges but i do think it could be done with sugestion and hypnosis. The human mind process tones of information all the time that we are hardly aware of its like when they say we only use small percentage of our brain. So for instance if he askes someone to think of a number or a colour he will have already have told or suggested to them exactly which number or colour to think of already albiet in a very subtle way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Donaldio

Right so watch the trick at about seven muintes in here he askes a guy to point out with his finger a seemingly random word on a newspaper but notice he uses very similar words himself pointing to the newspaper and speaking to guy just before.
    Anyway i like him.

    "It's not magic, it's just smart! "

It's not exactly Hollywood, but he appeared in an episode of CSI:Miami. Imagine him and Horatio hanging out together. What a beautiful world that would be...

I have been to his shows before. Dunno is he fake or not but I found him entertaining

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,883 ✭✭✭✭Dtp1979

They're not fake. They don't pretend to be psychic. They say the opposite. Keith Barry has always said what he does isn't paranormal, it's just entertainment. How many times has he said " free will does not exist " as in I'm basically planting the words in your mouth for this trick but you don't know how I do it

He even asks the person to shout louder as he didn't hear which gives him more time to finish writing the number.

He used the same technique on a previous appearance on the Late Late show but the camera didn't cut from him quickly enough and he could be seen putting the 'thumb marker' back into his pocket.

It's a bit disingenuous to claim you don't use plants and then blatantly do.

Seen one of his live shows a few years back and the plants were pretty obvious too.

I wasn't talking about hypnotism. I was talking about his so called 'tricks' using people he's "never met before", as in the one's performed on the Late Late Show and at his shows.

A few years ago, think it was something to do with a cruise ship, was only in it for a few minutes IIRC...I actually remember posting on Boards about it now that I think of it...he's definitely not an actor :)

EDIT: Found it. He played a magician working on a cruise ship

I was very cynical before but went recently with a friend and I ended up on stage! I certainly wasn't a plant! Luckily it wasn't to be hypnotised. I really enjoyed the show & changed my opinion. I had seen one episode of his tv show (the psychic surgery one) and didn't like it but the live show was cool

Ahh Keith Barry, years ago when he was first starting to appear on tv, I spotted him doing "magic" on the street down the quays near Windmill lane. He was stopping people on the street getting them to pick a card or number or something (can't remember exactly now) then he would walk them down the road and onto Windmill lane and the number would have "magically" appeared in spray-paint on the wall.

Basically a guy stood down there with a walkie talkie and and would spray the number on the wall and then stroll around the corner and hide before they came down to the lane :pac:

Don't know people get worked up about him being a "fake". Any person with any sort of a logical brain would know that it's all trickery.

He is very skilled at it, and no doubt has had to research and practice his tricks a huge amount. Fair play I say.

Did you see the one where he put a gun to his head? It was so stupidly contrived it was more like comedy.
