I would definitely recommend this race. The swim is in a man made regatta lake so its straight out and back. It was mirror calm on the day, water quality might not be fantastic(reeds and plants, swan poo) but it was grand. The cycle is fantastic. Smooth roads some motorway closed off, very scenic and great support on the road. The run is then around the regatta lake, which is long and straight, then off down the river bank to the Nottingham forest Stadium and back twice. The run is very forgiving as it is on fine gravel track along the river then flat tarmac around the lake.

The organisation is excellent and very friendly. Junctions etc well marshalled and feed stations are massive with endless helpers and marshalls.

This was my first race longer than a sprint distance so I chose a forgiving course. It had all of the big race feel though. Very affordable and well worth the travel.:D:D:D

Apologies to anyone from Nottingham, but if I see that place again it will be too soon. I would recommend camping/staying one night and heading somewhere nice after the race, as a family there we checked out of our hotel and headed back to Wales instead of staying around.:o:o

Shadowman turned out to be a great event. It all seemed very well organized to me.

Holy God, that run was hard. One should not attempt a half-ironman without doing a few hard brick sessions beforehand! It felt as if I had my wetsuit on, ankles taped up and water poured in up to my knees. I actually looked down to see what was attached to my feet dragging me down in T2.

I have learned that I am so so far away from being able to complete a full ironman. I have renewed respect for anyone who has ever completed a full distance tri.

Happy with my time - I think it accurately reflects of my fitness level. Now to plan the next challenge.

How did the rest of you get on?

Awful conditions meant cycle was shortened by 20km and swim by 1.2km so very hard to gauge what time would have been, I suspect around the 5:30 mark.

<5:30 always was stretch goal and almost utopia. Very happy with how I conducted myself (except for wasting time in transition). Great race.
