Rising fuel costs, clampdown on trailers, registration of boats and jet skis and now this ! it all getting too much..

Think i'll join the likes of Steve, Heidi, Pedroibar and the rest of that crew, they don't seem to have half the hassle to go out on their crafts... Now what's a genoa??

A bit in the Sunday Independent http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/raft-of-planned-canal-bank-levies-takes-heavy-toll-on-boat-owners-29950792.html €75 in tolls to get from one side of Dublin to the other

I see WI issued a warning to close the canal at Sallins from tomorrow till the 13th of March http://kapitaens-handbuch.com/?m=20140125 but for some strange reason they closed it on friday trapping some boats in that were heading to the protest at Sallins yesterday

There's going to be a segment about this on Seascapes, RTE1 10.30pm next Friday. Some brave soul from IWA is going to be interviewed.

I have been trying to convince people for a while now that boating is not just for the rich and that with a bit of work and knowledge anyone could enjoy the waterways, I feel now that if these new Laws are passed the waterways will only become a playground for the wealthy forcing the average Jo soap to look on from the banks.

If anyone want's to help fight this they can print out this letter,http://www.iwai.ie/press/Bye_Law_Letter_WI_22012014.pdf sign it and post it to WI Customer Care Co-ordinator, Somerview House, Old Dublin Rd, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

Or you can make an online submission https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8XMLCSL

Keep up to date on the FB page https://www.facebook.com/IWAICanals

Hopefully together we can get WI to rethink this before it's too late.

I think there is scope for this one to be fought IMO. Its ill thought out and a huge backward step.

A bit pedantic maybe but the grammar and spelling in that notice is awful and reads like it was written by a five year old. For something as important as that you would think they would at least proofread it.

The pockets are already empty:( for most boaters and they are hanging onto their boats by the skin of their teeth I know a good few that have had to give them up and more that are thinking about it and these new charges will be the nail in the coffin. I can only see WI loosing money over this instead of making it as it will force leisure boaters, fishermen, tourist and people that live on the water off the water. I know WI do need some funding but these increases are huge for anyone to take in one hit especially when they are standing on a very narrow beam.

This is going to be expensive for a lot of canal users and the people on liveaboards :(https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0VlYpwXHpP0NUtpTFNycXh4M3I0dnpGQmlxcEJ5RTFTOThZ/edit?pli=1

Well done for raising this issue Fergal with Boards members but i think it may of had more hits and feed back if the topic had been titled .....New Bye-Laws will cost boaters a small fortune .... and emphasise the FACT that these huge increases in fees although hitting the Grand, Royal and Barrow initially these are just the start, Waterways Ireland have already stated that these Bye-Laws and additional fees will be rolled out across all OUR navigations including the Erne.

Boating and the enjoyment of OUR waterways could soon be yet another pursuit for just those who can afford it.

A lot more can be learnt on this topic here......... http://www.iwai.ie/forum/list.php?1
