Hi there i am looking into moving to Galway city area, I currently have to commute an hour to work on the Headford Road and I would like to know what is the Leas na Mara area of Knocknacarra like or Knocknacarra in general like? Also can someone advise me on the level of traffic in this area heading towards the headford road? thanks

Knockers is nice but traffic from there to Headford Rd will be heavy at peak hours, you get both school runs and people driving to work.
I'd look at Castlelawn Heights or Tirellan Heights or places on the same side of the river as work.

If you are going to move for a shorter commute, stay the same side of the river as your work...

I live in Knoclnacarra and I work out in Parkmore. I leave at around 7.55am in the morning and I get to work at 8.20am at the latest. I finish work at 6pm, and I'm usually home around 6.45pm. I used to live on the Headford Road, so from a commute/traffic point of view it was a bit nuts moving over to the west side of the city. But I moved into a really nice place in Knocknacarra so that makes the extra time commuting worthwhile.

My other half leaves Knocknacarra at 8.20 everyday and drops kids to school and is always at her desk in Liosban (via Headford Road) by 9am everyday. When schools are off, she leaves home at 8.35am.

Not trying to be smart, but moving to Knocknacarra means you will only be reducing the commute to 30 minutes, sometimes more if you hit school traffic. I would seriously suggest looking elsewhere on the eastside.

Depends what you see as an acceptable commute, and also what time you start work, if it's 8 or 8:30, then you're looking at 15-20min commute as the roads are less busy then.
You also don't have to take the main artery routes to get from Knocknacarra to the bridge, which will be jam-packed with traffic at peak times.

At the risk of being accused of "hi-jacking" a thread with an "adgenda", there is pretty much a continuous cycle path from knocknacarra to the headford road and it would be about 15-20 minutes of easy pace cycling..... the same 15-20 minutes no matter what time of the day or night.

I wouldn't let something like traffic decide for you where you where going to live

    *tiptoes away*

would you think of the north of the city... Crestwood, Menlo... very quick commute then esp. on a bike

    🌦️ 6.7kwp, 45°, SSW, mid-Galway 🌦️

It's a nice cycle to the headford road but uphill from Westside right through Knocknacarra. Certainly not for the faint hearted or those unfit!

Aragh it's one measily hill......excitement at finishing work and going home for the evening would easily lift you over.

A 3K hill if you are going to the cappagh road. Fine for me but i know some novice cyclists who struggled on that stretch until they got used to it. Anyway why even bother discuss this. If the OP wants is looking for a suitable location Knocknacarra is not suitable for travelling to the headford road. Better to live and work on the same side of the corrib imo

Thanks for all the replies! I suppose I am looking at Saving only a half hour off my commute but I live in the middle of nowhere with my parents and while I do love home I feel for my age I should be goin out more and doing more in the evenings eg cinema and livin so far from the city makes it harder to socialise. Knocknacarra is a lovely area and I found a few nice houses so I think I May chance it :)

If you get a 6 month lease or so you can always move again if traffic gets too bad.
That said, you kinda get used to it.

That's exactly what happens. People get to know their commute, and the general conditions in which it occurs, and they adapt accordingly.

If that is your priority and if you aren't bringing a partner and kids along with you I would suggest living in town or on the Headford Road itself - minimal commute and you can walk into town, to the cinema, shops whatever.

Living in the suburbs has advantages but you will still be commuting and depending on buses to get into town for a night out and taxis to get home if you want to have a drink.

Yeah, and then we never complain about it. We never complain about anything here.

I'd say 50% of posts on boards are complaining about one thing or another :D
