I'm moving to Kilkenny City in April after living in London for 18 years
What is the cost of living? What bills would I need to pay & how much they would be for a 2 bed apartment. Ive checked Daft.ie so I know roughly what rent would be

It's a lot lot cheaper than Dublin. Could get à three bed roomed house for around 600 a month and rent out a room to make it even cheaper. Beer is around 4.20 a pint. Plenty of take always and pretty cheap restraunts.

Elec every two months then for biils and broadband ranges from 30 to 50 if not included with accomadation

For a start living in Kilkenny is beautiful, the people are brilliant, shopping is okay depends what you want. However the lack of public transport compared to London demands you need a car to get anywhere even in the city, but you have no doubt already sussed this out. To get to any other town is a work of art, Dublin is easiest the train is reasonable if booked on line. If you want to go back to London the trip to Rosslare is pathetic, you should be aware of this. My main crib was the lack of DIY stores, yes Woodies but from London you expect more, and Woodies is not cheap.
But with all that there is nothing to compare with Kilkenny, the fact that complete strangers will talk to you is worth so much and you do not have to worry about eye contact, you will understand this more than our locals.
shopping can take longer as people have time to pass the time of day, Enjoy Kilkenny it is a brilliant experience.

I thought it was something else!

Anyway having moved away I think you're bills will depend on where you live. I rented a few different houses over the years and the difference in energy bills was mainly due to how well insulated these houses were.
Properties for sale are supposed to come with an energy rating so that's helpful.
If you have time I would suggest trying the private ads in the Kilkenny people for rentals, it's always been cheaper than going through agents and mostly it's been little hassle, landlords just want their cash and no hassle.

    This is not realistic??

    This is not realistic??

Not a hope. Perhaps in a council estate just maybe.
2 bed apts are going for over 600 in the city these days.

Kilkenny is cheaper than Dublin rent wise, of course, but on the grand scale not that cheap. A well fitted, insulated, located property is pretty expensive.

Might not be the most modern / attractive-looking house, but the location is fantastic, right beside St. Mary's Cathedral, and 2 minutes walk from High Street. (€600 p mth.)

what is your issue with Callan?
I live there and I am able to leave my house at 8.40 every morning and be on time for work in KK at 9.00

Callan has schools, shops, is close to the M9 and relatively close to the M8, only 20min journey time to Kilkenny on a better road then Thomastown has.

Add to that, Callan has a great golf course, the GAA clubs new facilities are fantastic, the Raquetball club has recently reopened and is doing extremely well. Saying all that I live in the town but I work and socialise in Kilkenny. Its a 20 minute drive (15 on quiet days) and after a night out in KK 30 euro will get you a taxi home.

Callan....no worse a reputation than Comer, Graig etc. ah sure nothing slightly scandalous ever happens in Kilkenny.... People love to hear one or two (mostly exaggerated) stories and apply that to the entire town

Callan is a lot better than 'comer. It's a good business town with a lot of no e new estates. Defo worse towns going.

Why the bad rep for Callan guys?

It used to be famous for an intergenerational feud that split the town, can't remember the details but every few years there's be a serious flareup. There's no sense or reason to it of course but you could class it as a blood feud.

I think Callan has a lot going for it, maybe in time there may a regular bus service that would make commuting even easier and cheaper.

comers a lot better now that certain members of the dealing variety have moved/been jailed/died off

Both Callan and Comer have really come on in recent years. Callan has particularly benefitted from the increased arts funding in the town and the community spirit generated from the Abhainn Ri festival. The Discovery Park in Comer has done a great job of getting people into the town. Regional tourism in County Kilkenny is majorly increasing and both Callan and Castlecomer have done a lot to attract visitors.

It is, but still wouldn't go out drinking at night there. Have felt less than welcome in a couple of pubs there.

True the Discovery Park is a great success and what that town needs. Badly.

But I think Callan is a much better town for business and has much more going on. Still has a few decent big employers like Bretts and the Bacon Co. Also good agricultural base around it.
Castlecomer by contrast lost all or most of its manufacturing. Aldi opened in Callan, doubt they'd even dream of 'Comer.
The link to the M9 is even a pain in the arse as if you're going to Dublin, the shortest, main route via N78 brings you through athy which is a traffic nightmare. Only 90km from Dublin but has not capitalised on this at all.
