Arched Bridges

    Hi all.

I live in Leixlip and go to college in DIT. I'm doing a project on masonry arched bridges. Part of the project involves assessing a small masonry arched bridge.

I'm just wondering if there are any in Kildare? I'm sure there are but I don't really know where. I've tried looking on google maps but it's fairly time consuming. I thought maybe some boardsies who live in Kildare might know of some.

The bridge has to be less than 12m across and I'd need to be getting under it to carry out the assessment so ideally I'd be looking for a small bridge over a stream or something out the backroads somewhere. If anybody knows of one then I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know where it is.

    Thanks for any help

The canal bridge at hazel hatch (beside the hatch bar - on the Celbridge to Newbridge road) might be a good bet. Further in towards on Celbridge if you take the right turn (heading towards Celbridge) you'll come to a narrow bridge over the railway that may meet your needs.

There are a few bridges over the canal running behind the town in Naas that might also work?

Another suggestion (from my wife) on the Maynooth to Kilcock road if you take the left after the grave yard (you pass it on the right) - there is a bridge over the railway line that might work for you.

Looks like the old railway bridge near Celbridge has been re-built :(

Have a look along the canals, there might be a viaduct or aqueduct along there nearby so you could have a look under and over the bridge quite easily. I can think of one or two along the Grand canal, but that might be a bit far for you.

Great point - again near Naas - viaduct where the canal a crosses the Liffey -

Thank you for all the suggestions but the only thing is I need to actually get right out to the mid span point of the bridge. I really need something more like this kind of size sLytto6.jpg

This should do it you can stand on the lock gates, there is also a small pedestrian arch beside canal and I think an unused arch beside the rail line.

Ok that's harder. There's one in the japanese gardens at the national stud at that scale.

In Dublin there are similar bridges in bushy park rathfarnham.

The smallest other bridge I can think of in Kildare is the pedestrian bridge over a canal spur on the newbridge road out of Naas:

    Hi op,

Just a suggestion. Try and make contact with your local County Council Roads Area Engineer. They should be able to suggest the location of some suitable arch bridges.

    Good luck

The river Morrell just down from the Liffey bridge in Straffan is under your 12 metres and you can stand in under it.

That's brilliant, both of those look perfect. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
