Dodgy left leg that I had finally gave up at mile 18 - and it did it in a place where it hadn't given me any pain before so it threw me off big time. Took me about 5 miles of stopping stretching refueling and more stretching before I could get going again by then of course the 3.30 had gone, but managed to scrape in on the 3.45 so happy for my first time to at least have that, especially when i was wondering if I actually was going to be able to finish it!

Big Thanks to the pacers! Wish I could have stayed with you to the end!

Biggest frustration is that I don't feel that bad today and so know I had more to give if my leg had held out but sure there is always next time :)

The man with the fastest second half marathon split in history apparently. Found by the man with the greatest detective skills in history apparently.

Poor pacing on my part, went off way too fast. Aiming for 7:07ish miles, my first four miles were all sub seven minutes  ran out of juice around 18 miles and slogged on home from there.

Sub 3:10 was probably too optimistic, should have gone with the 3:15 pacers in hindsight. Oh well. Not overly disappointed with the day all in all, best marathon I've run in a long time. Lots of good support out on the course, nice weather and good atmosphere around town all day. Enjoyable day.

I see there are some negative comments on the Cork Running Blog in regards to the low numbers for the marathon yesterday... Some suggestions to move Cork to another weekend etc. Anyone tend to agree with that?

I personally think it is on a great weekend, although I must say I probably would be more tempted if it was the May bank holiday (clashes with Limerick, I know..) as weather would be better and I would have more time to recover for summer series of shorter races etc. The heat in Cork on the June bank holiday never ceases to amaze me though...

First half done and finished under my predicted time so really happy with that!!
Enjoyed the whole day, thought the support and atmosphere was brilliant throughout!
    Well done to all

Fantastic atmosphere and support around the course. Great to see so many kids handing out jellies etc.

Names on bibs were fantastic - was great to hear someone call out your name. Great organisation all round.

Personally I did struggle for last 6/7 miles. Just wasn't in the legs on the day. On another day I feel I could have ran 10-15mins quicker but wasn't to be. Stop-started a lot for the last few miles. The half marathoners/relay runners flying by didn't help my cause.

May bank holiday is a complete non-starter, we already have the Limerick marathon, Belfast marathon, Ballyhoura marathon, Wings for Life run, Bandon half marathon and Bantry half marathon as well as a few smaller races that same weekend.

Cork's date is just fine. You'll always get people say a lot of nonsense in anonymous comments.

You have loads of club runners traveling oversea to run spring marathons. Personally I would rather run Cork and the old date of easter weekend was best. I am not interested in putting 6 months training into a day where it could be really hot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 167 ✭✭RICHIE-RICH

Agree with TFB - the weekend is fine. Perhaps they could move it to the Sunday, but I know that there are issues with roads, gardai, etc for having it on the sunday instead of the monday.

I did the half and the change of the start to the city centre was a great move. Left city hall at 10:30 and strolled across and was hanging around for the start.

I was pacing my wife who was doing the full - waited around for her at mile 2 / 15. At that point I was dead last - by a long way!
I successfully brought her to the finish line while carrying her water/gels bananas etc, and she finished in 4:23. She was delighted with her time. I don't even want to think about my time, but i know i didn't come last.

Again the organisation was very good, and all little issues from previous years have been ironed out.

There will have to be some encouragement to get the marathon numbers up.
Maybe, as suggested elsewhere in this thread, there should be a drive on to recruit new or lapsed marathoners.

Possible strategies (from the top of my head - am no marketing genius as you can see...)
Mentored weekend long runs for particular paces ( a 4 hour group; a 3:30 group etc), in conjunction with local running clubs - this may boost local club numbers as an aside/bonus.
A "marathon series" of races starting from a 5 miler to a 10, a half and then the marathon (like in Dublin) - this could be subsidised, or even tied in with other local established races - e.g. do the pre-race series and get 30% off the full entry fee
direct marketing at those that did the half, and are on a high at the moment - offer reduced prices for entry to the full next year, and incorporate some kind of incentive (special t shirt , distinctive number for 2015 event)
Refer a friend -get a discount if you get another runner to sign up for next year - two entries for say 100, instead of 60 each/

Now is the time to get those runners who just completed the marathon, to come back next year; as well as getting the halfers to make the move up the distance.

Easter Sunday can fall anywhere between 21st March and 25th April. I don't think that would work.

Where do all those complaints about low numbers come from all of a sudden? Over 1000 runners in the full, that's not small. As far as I know only Dublin and Belfast are bigger in Ireland.

I think the view is that the half and relay are overtaking the event and it is now a half/relay with a marathon; as opposed to a marathon with a half/relay option.

In reality the numbers of finishers are below and show a steady 1300/1400 but beginning to drop off (slightly) in last two years :

    2007: 1,355
    2008: 1,338
    2009: 1,269
    2010: 1,427
    2011: 1,379
    2012: 1,399
    2013: 1,206
    2014: 1,073

I guess the fear is that the powers that be will pull the plug and then it'll be gone forever.

With a little bit of encouragement, advertising, and marketing, it should be easy enough to get the numbers back up and even increase them.

If you look at Dublin, they have had steady increases over the past few years.

The rumors of that it's one of the toughest courses in Ireland need to be squashed also, amazes me that so many say that. I would put it up there with one of the easier ones.

Certainly not a very difficult course, I thought it was fair, well organized and very possible to run good times in it. I sort of ended up doing it by default but delighted that I did.

there are already too many marathons in April and May, whatever about a possible March date maybe? Realistically though, with the number of races on the calendar, it'll be difficult to have large numbers

Tbh there was very little coverage of the event apart from Alex o Shea, I think they need to be more proactive in promoting the marathon, they need tele adverts a big online presence, make it as part of some big festival promoting Cork to be fair there is a fear out there when this event is mentioned people automatically think of hills that needs to change, it is a great event The names on the bibs was a fantastic idea, we are the second city we should at least have the second best marathon role on 2015 I for one are looking forward to it so much

The big problem with coverage with the cork marathon is that the Ladies Mini Marathon is on on the same day in Dublin, that gets all the news, i was driving at home trying to find out who won the cork marathon, as i wanted to find out did Gary O'Hanlan win it, the radio station mentioned who won the ladies mini marathon and then mentioned Alex O'Shea breaking the world record but didn't mention any thing about the race winner. I got really pissed off!! I ran the marathon last year and remember driving home and again radio station going on about the min marathon but nothing about cork, my wife explained to me that the mini marathon in Dublin raises a lot for charity and should be the main news..fair enough, but its not a marathon
It needs to be on a different day to the ladies mini marathon. thats the only way to get more attention, and probably on a different weekend. and just a marathon..
