This is rubbish. I've still haven't had my emails from yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭cunnijo

Just checked in the last few minutes. Seems to be back up, for how long you may ask?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,054 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Mine is still down. Hard to imagine it takes so long to fix, but I really don't know what the issues are. UTV is not giving much details or saying when it might be fixed.

    Hi all,

Still checking and no emails access yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 620 ✭✭✭cunnijo

Checked again. It seems that email clients still cannot access the server. However their webmail page seems to be working for now.

its hardly great timing, send a email demanding 25 euro per year to keep your email address and the have the server keel over twice in 2 days.

Maybe they think people will pay to improve the service.

I suspect they just want to remove the freeloaders then move to another server or something.

i expect so. lets hijack the server and people will think its **** and wont want to pay.

I got that email from them as well. I was wondering if it was genuine and I see from this thread it obviously must be. I have a Gmail address I registered years ago, time to start changing email addresses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,503 ✭✭✭thefinalstage

It's kind a toss up. E-mail accounts do cost money to run. The could either monetize it like g-mail or charge a straight up fee.

think ill pay for this year and then slowly wind down the utv over the year. a month notice doesnt cut it.

A month is long enough for me :D
If I miss the odd one, they won't be that important and I'm sure within 2 months at the most I'll have changed any I want to change. ;)

    Just a quick followup...

If you really value having control over your email and keeping the same address, the correct approach is to:
    - buy a domain and setup MX records to route emails to a mail server
    - create regular offline backups of the mail on the server.

this gives you lots of flexibility:
    - if you want to change your mail server / mail storage provider, you can switch to another company and just update the MX records. you keep the same address.
    - if your provider goes away (ireland.com example), you can just update MX records.
    - if you want to change the registrar (e.g. they start charging too much; change their policies / service), you can just move the whole domain elsewhere

In theory, you would never need to use any other email address. Of course, this doesn't come for free so you really have to weigh up the pros and cons of have an email addy on someone else's domain vs having control over the whole stack.

A review of some of the "easy to use" options available here: http://web.appstorm.net/roundups/email-roundups/the-best-places-to-host-your-email-with-your-own-domain/

not sure what you mean by moving the account. Your UTV account will be deleted and all mail in it will be lost unless you have been downloading them to your computer all along using Livemail, Outlook or some other programme like that.
Don't know what the story is with opening a new eircom address whether you have to be an Eircom customer or not.
I have started using Gmail which is free and download my messages into Livemail.

I spent a couple of evenings going through all my emails, 4 years worth sending emails to the ones I wanted to inform of my change of email.
I put them into alphabetical order so it wasn't as bad as it might appear. I also sent emails to everyone in my contact list.
I got a few surprises, seeing emails, from 3 or 4 years ago, people I used to be in contact with then, wondering where the 3/4 years went
I also contacted other main bodies I deal with e.g banks, service providers etc.
Anything I have missed isn't worth worrying about at this stage :pac:
Now all I need is for Gmail to inform me they are going to start charging  ha ha ha

Has anyone heard from UTV about their email address. I am looking to hold on to mine for another year or two and to be fair I don't mind paying a little (as I have had a free address for the last 12 years). I registered my interest in paying but haven't heard anything since.

i was told over the next 2 weeks , they would be contacting people. id say once they do that , its bye bye email.

Got an email from them this morning saying a lot of people have contacted them saying they wish to keep their UTV email addresses. Also that the email addresses will remain active until April 6th, after that they will be deleted if you don't pay the money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,553 ✭✭✭lmimmfn

since their last outtage ive been progressively moving all my accounts over to a free email address, its decent enough of them to extend the period though( gives me a chance to make sure i havnt missed anything ).

25euro per year is a bit much for an email address in all honest, if it was 5 euro i would have just paid it.

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

same here. I'd say they will give 1 last warning and maybe a day or 2 countdown

    Greetings all,

Has anyone had confirmation that they are going to be able to keep their addresses yet from UTV.

Received another email from them last weekend, but seems the emails are still working.

I hope that they do actually improve the service.

    Regards

UTV called me yesterday and advised that from end of june they will be closing down the email facility for all customers.Stating this was for commercial reasons due to insufficient numbers not wishing to hold on to their email account

can they do this, I have had my accounts for nearly 15 years, they run our businesses and I do not have a problem in paying for the service. As the cost to redirect emails to a new account would prove devastating to our business.

    Greetings,

Yes just got off the phone to UTV and they will cease email access from end of june, they will supply a password to access those accounts that are unavailable at present.
they advised me that they had not received my online submission to keep my accounts.
Perhaps this has happen to many more customers.
All I can do is email complaints@u.tv

    Disgusted.
They knew this already but have not updated their website.

As it's 'free' service, I doubt if there's any point in complaining. Got the phonecall too and they hadn't received my online submission to retain the address either. Could it be that a lot more people wanted to keep their email but their system didn't record their preference? I even received a new password with my updated preference but now I have no access to the email since the 20th :(

I understand it a free service, but we once did pay for it.
and maybe the complaint will have some merit based on the system not picking up the online requests.

Tbh, once they announced they were "moving" to a pay service, this was always going to be the result. Unless there were thousands of people willing to pay (which there was never going to be), there is no way the service would pay for itself.

The only reason they announced the possibility of a pay-service was because it would attract a lot less complaints than an immediate shutdown.

They were (supposedly) going to keep it 'free' for those who were broadband customers, which I still was at the time. Now, no one is being facilitated, which is a bit cheap of them. I still have an Eircom account from back in the days of dial-up and I haven't been a customer of theirs since - instead, I've been with UTV, ironically (but not any more).

Does this mean even existing paying customers are about to loose their email Accounts ????

Yes, it would appear so - they said they were withdrawing the service in its entirety from everyone, unless I took them up wrong? I have only just switched to another ISP.

Yes, just informed by tech support they're ending email even for current ISP customers in June. He did say "down south" so there better not be some POP3 Partition in progress. No ISP should be able to abdicate email provision like this. Even when the Online.ie portal ditched email, the accounts were migrated through Google hosting and are still viable.

I do not understand, why they would remove email access for existing paying customers and not have any notification on their web site, leaving only 5 weeks to get everything in order.
It seems like my rant to their customer service sparked the removal of the online updating, or just coincidence.....
Have they no concept of how intergrated an email address is to people...
It will take months to sort out any new changes.
we need a name to communicate to
