The green lines on the SIRO map represent where the existing ESB lines run if I understand correctly. Or at least ones that can be used for possible Fibre roll-out.

    No.
The Map is essentially a roadmap, but it shows only Local roads, boreens and some driveways. The Motorways, National roads and Regional roads have been removed.

You can see how it works if you line up a google map side-by side with the SIRO map. IMO the green lines (outside the towns) have no significance.

I refer you both to post #2306 just above ...

Thank you for your email. The green lines on the map do not indicate the coverage, they are purely decorative. As you may know, phase one of roll-out will target 50 regional towns, including Roscommon. Phase One is concentrated on the urban boundaries of the town, which are determined by technical survey prior to the build. As we begin to roll-out in a town we inform the local media and local representatives of our plans and the probably scope of the coverage.
    Best wishes

So the map is purely ****e!!

Parents in law got a call. They're not the most technical so the info is a tad sketchy. Installer coming Monday to link it up for a 6 month trial.

I'll drop round Monday evening and take pics and speed tests for the forum.

They seem to think they are getting a new phone with the same number. Don't know how that will work but will see what happens Monday.

That's more like it. Please let us all know what it looks like, installation wise, and, of course some speed tests, anything to stop the squiggly line discussion would help!

    Hi,

Had the Vodafone siro install since Tuesday, small provisioning issue issue on the day meant they had to come back on Wednesday - so far so good though

700 down / 207 up on average , did get 800 / 800 at one point but it seems to have slowed down a little over the week

Can you post pics of the installed hardware?

I'd like to - came here to do just that - but only a new user so no URLs , no Pics ... any ideas?

Just paste the links as plain text. A more established member can then repost them.

I don't know how accurate Speedtest.net will be with such speeds. Try downloading a large iso from heanet to give you another perspective.

I'm on a Mac - sorry to be such a newbie - but any particular ISO ? the OpenCD-4.0.iso took around 10 secs , but I assume there's a more accurate way of tracking the download?

Sorry I should have linked one. It is a bit of a maze. This one is 1.7GB in size. Watch the transfer rate as it is downloading. Theoretical top speed for gigabit is 125 MB/sec but you will not get this.

Time the download also if you can.

Maaaan that's sweet, hard to believe it's in ireland. How much is it per month? I'm out of contract with eir in December and my town is on the list for phase 1. I notice esb replacing all the old wooden poles in town maybe somethings happening....

Just in case the 1.7GB iso download was too small (it should have taken less than 20 seconds) I have found a few bigger files on heanet. Download a few of the largest files at once and watch the total transfer speed. I guess ~110MB/s would be the best you could expect.

    http://ftp.heanet.ie/debian-cd/8.2.0/amd64/iso-dvd/?C=S;O=D

    Thanks for doing this btw.

This all assumes the hard disk in your Mac can write data at a greater speed than your connection is downloading it. If it is an SSD you should be fine. Even a relatively new mechanical drive should have a write speed greater than 125 MB/s.

First Siro result I think. Ping is great. 642/208. No doubt that will settle back to 800/800 + or better :D

Not quite, another poster was part of the initial trials a few months ago.

Would love to know how much Vodafone are charging?

That is the key missing information.

Why are the speeds so bad? Id have expected full speed up and down. Are they still working on settings etc?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 mishapk

    Hi,

Pricing I can't say , it's a trial and any pricing will be "confirmed towards the end of trial if I choose to stay with Vodafone" . My best guess it will be "competitive" which means for the 1Gb service near Eir Extreme Broadband which is around 90 per month

For speed testing I'm on a Macbook Air 2014 with SSD , the initial Heanet 1.7Gb file took around 30secs hitting ( according to Safari ) around 50Mbs - I'll do some more testing later in the day.

eir's standalone 1000/100 pricing is €70 pm, bundled with phone €82-€95 (depending on package).

    Where are you located?

So it begins, they promise 1GB/s and only give you 700 MB/s, their networks sucks, I would get on to comreg, straight away..

When it gets so bad that you just can't stand it anymore, I will swap homes with you, just to give you a break...

On the Point road in Dundalk , sorry I should have said that earlier

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 mishapk

They are trialling it and did say to expect speeds to fluctuate - I planned to let it settle down for a few weeks before making an issue of the speed - it would be different if I was paying for 1Gbs - but this is a free trial so I'm willing to be a little more gracious.

can you try the pings over a greater distance and see what they come out as, ie USA

  • Registered Users Posts: 19 mishapk

I'm seeing pings to the US ( tried about half a dozen locations , east/west coast mostly ) range from lowest around 90ms up to around 155ms .

Also on the multiple file downloads , three 4+ Gb iso run in parallel reached around 75Mbs combined , download completing around 2m30s - 2m45s , ran the download three times to be sure.

75MB/s is ~600Mb/s but if Vodafone warned you about speed fluctuations it is to be expected. As you say it is hard to argue when it is free! How long will your trial last and do you have to provide feedback?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,472 ✭✭✭swoofer

have you an xbox by any chance and check pings on that!!

I have an xbox 360 - connected wirelessly - I'll do a ping test on that and get back to you. The trial is until end of March 2016.
