I had 50Mb Broadband and Anytime landline calls and 400mins international.
    I was paying 47euro
This would have increased by 2euro to 49euro in March with new price hykes.
I rang them earlier today and they eventually said i can have same package and theyll up the speed BB to 120Mb for 40euro per month for 12months

    Origional price 49Eurox12Months= 588euro
    NewPrice 40Eurox12Months= 480Euro

    Saved myself 108Euro per year

    Another question
Do you have to give 30notice if your contract is up after 12months

Sounds like a plan to lock people into new contracts

Conor Pope was on Marion Finucane's radio show this morning, talking about this issue. His strong advice was for people to dispute the increase. Also said UPC's increases over the past 3/4yrs were very sizable and inferred that people should walk for free if they did'nt want to give UPC any more dosh. Have to say I was surprised at the vehemence of his argument.

i'm paying 36 euro a month for 30 mb it now goes up by 6.50, so it will be 42.50

now I see they are offering 50 Mb for new customers

    50Mb Broadband
    Home Phone with Freetime World

for 25 euros for first 6 months and then 37 euros thereafter

Unbelievable companies who treat existing customers so badly.

here is the letter from them

Over the past 12 months, UPC has introduced superb new products to bring the best digital experience to our customers including Fibre Powered Horizon TV, superfast broadband and phone services. Through our network investments to date and our ongoing investments in programming, content and technology, we are focused on delivering quality and value for money to all of our customers.
Due to increases in overall programming and operating costs, we will need to increase your monthly subscription. We are aware that any price adjustment is unwelcome so we have ensured that the increase is kept to the minimum possible. Details of this price change are outlined below.

Changes to your monthly subscription charges from March
The change to the price of your UPC services, which is listed below, will be reflected in your bills from March 2014.

    Change to your subscription

    Your price change

    €6.50 Inc. VAT per month

was in the same boat as you until i rang them and haggled. told them i was leaving and they offered me 50mb broadband with 30 gig limit for 26e per month. Golden rule is to haggle, all the time.

You need to haggle more/better , I am on 50Mb UNLIMITED Broadband with Basic Phone , The Broadband is going to 120Mb on March 1 , Price now is €27 , Price after price Hike is still €27,:D

I got 50mb unlimited BB, home phone and tv for 37 euro monthly, if they raise the price on me il be giving them a call back. I called to cancel and they offered me a year at that price for all the services. It took a few phone calls though. They were ripping my mother off charging her 80 for this same package the last 3 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,743 ✭✭✭Wanderer2010

Wow, I must be very innocent to haggling etc as I tend to just take the price given to me and leave it at that. I would like some opinions from the hardcore hagglers here! Am I being ripped off and if so, whats the best way to haggle down the price as I tried haggling with insurance a few times and they wouldt budge, their attitude being "Oh well go somewhere else then".

Anyway heres my UPC deal at present: 50Mb broadband, digital tv and phone (150 free mins a month) for 78euros a month. Well, is this normal or a rip off??

Are you on a plan that's going up? Not all customers will see an increase.

Yeah but I was told that the phone line (which goes into the modem) causes an extra "socket" charge or something along those lines, was that just a con or what? Im definitely ringing them up now if its down in black and white that its 60euros after 6 months..

Is anyone cancelling and signing up again? Whats the story with timeframe how long does it take? Do you keep your old number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,977 ✭✭✭rocky

Just ordered the 50Mb for 37 a month, 7 less than I'm paying now for 30, and the phone is upgraded from the basic, but I'm not using it.

Could have ordered the 120Mb, but want to leave something to upgrade to in the future... don't feel like 30Mb is limiting me now in anyway.

They said to me that you couldn't sign up for 2 months if you cancel now. (load of rubbish I'd say) you could get your partner to resign straight away if you like.
If I were you, i'd stand firm and they'll give you a great package at a cheaper price

If you cancel you have to wait 3 months to be able to be able to rejoin as a "new customer".

Heard nothing from them myself.Have Digital max multiroom+50MB broadband without phone.

Hope my Broadband is going up to 120MB like everyone else on the 50MB

Well, when I signed up last July, I was on a bundle with:

    Digital Extra TV
    50Mb broadband
    Freetime world

Since then, I upgraded the broadband to 100Mb (this was before they upped everyone to 120) and the phone to Anytime world.

I imagine the rate increases will affect this package but I guess I'll ring them tomorrow.

You own the number. And you can take it to another provider. It can't be reused by anyone else until a few months?/years? have gone by.

The down side is if a new customer signs up they aren't entitled to your number.

    YMMV

Cancel down a line for even a few days and good luck getting it back. Good point ref the new customer, but to be honest I'm not sure anyone is fussed about LL numbers these days, unless they're using it for business (at which point they'rte not complying with the terms of their contract) or they're over 65.

    We have

The basic value package (digital plus box)

2 additional boxes in bedrooms (digital plus boxes)

    30mb broadband

    No phone

and we are paying 87 a month.

I was offered this for €50 a month the other night when they called, 1 extra point only.

I declined again,no way would I enter into a contract.

Just rang up went from 60Mb BB + phone for €44 to 50Mb BB + phone for €37.

    Happy enough with that.

Just off the phone with UPC. Have 50mb fibre and phone with 150 mobile and landline calls. Was paying €37 which included a fiver loyalty discount. Increase in email was €2.

Got through to cancellations. Told them my router is ****e and pissed with the increases when i was only after getting a discount. Tried to get the package that was mentioned before for €27 or even €30. Told me it didn't exist.

Best she did was €34.50 for same package upgraded to 120mb or €32.50 for 50 mb. She also booked and engineer to look at my router. Took the 50mb and saving around €80 a year, thanks OP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,088 ✭✭✭OU812

Offered full channel package up from basic, upgrade from 50 mb to 100 mb & also 2 months free sports & movies (I watch neither) for €3 above my current package.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭free_man

I have 50MB broadband and Anytime World package and pay 47 euro for the privilege.

UPC don't do anytime world anymore (nothing online and helpdesk say the same). As most of my calls to Ireland are during the day, I am gonna stick with current plan and live with the increase. I am sure to save the extra 2 euros by all landline calls during the day :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,625 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

Guys, are ye all signing up to another 12 month contact when ye downgrade and accept these offers?

Just cancelled mine there after waiting nearly half an hour to talk to someone. Sounded like they were up the walls in the background! Done in less than 2 minutes.
Asked if there was anything they could do to change my mind. I said no, she gave me the email address and that was it.

Just to be clear: what you write here seems to imply that those already on Anytime World are grandfathered in and can keep the service. Is that your understanding?

They lie. Go with the basic phone package like I did and it will come down to 37 unless you make loads of international calls all day

    I never got any notification.

I have UPC broadband only. Is that going up yeah?

I was on the same package as you for €47 which would increase to €49 in March.
I rang them and they upgraded my BB to 120GB and i kept Anytime World for a total of €40 for 12 months

I'll have to check my inbox! I'm on the max TV package, 2 HD boxes and 1 normal box. 120MB broadband and the anytime world package. Is there a singular price or a price increase for each item? If it's the latter, I'm screwed!

They increase rate for phone calls. It seems to me like change to the contract even if my monthly fee is not affected. I'm on broadband 50 + digital telephony basic. They say on their webpage "Some of these call rates will change from 1 April 2014, details of which can be found here". Is this enough to get out of the contract?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 82 ✭✭jacubo

This worked!! You can cancel the contract saying you are not happy with increase in phone call rates.

In getting out of the contract are you obliged to sign up for another 12 months if you want to stay (if, for example, you haggled a sufficient discount out of them)?

I have no idea as I just wanted to get out. The woman from their team really wanted to keep me with them and offered discount which I rejected. Then she offered 2 months off which I also rejected. In the end she was pissed off but I was just repeating that I want to cancel.

According to what I was told on the phone, if I changed any part of my subscription, I was on a new 12 month contract effective from then.

Yes; if they give you a discounted rate to stay, it's on condition of signing up for another 12 months.

This makes sense especially if they offer you month or two for free. They still want to earn some money after all.

So did the cancellation kick in straight away, or do you have to wait a while? I'm one week into my billing cycle (haven't paid yet), so I'm wondering if they're going to try and make me see out the month?

You can cancel alright, I guess you'd have to say she just moved in or something.

Was on the 50mb unlimited with evening calls for €37/month, onto cancellations and kept turning them down on offers, on hold for a long while and settled on 120mb unlimited and anytime world (free landline calls all day) for half-price for 12 months at €24.50/month.
So the improvement for me is free calls during the day, an extra 70mb speed and €150 saving over 12months.
    F#@king result;)
