Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Chris Smalling is having a shocker.

After the under 21 tournament they were hyped to the moon, especially after it became clear that they would also be playing for the same club. Any time they play together at the heart of the Man Utd defence you will almost inevitably hear the commentator say "you may be looking at the long term defensive partnership for Man Utd and England." On the evidence of tonight, and any other time they have played at centre back, I think it's safe to say that wont be the case.

Hmm, I see. Safe to say that hype has evaporated over the last few years :pac:

What I don't get about this game is that Hodgson said they're preparing for Manuas like conditions but opted to play a team who probably won't be their starting XI V Italy in Manaus...

Man if England have to start Lampard they are in some trouble! He's about as mobile as a tractor with no wheels.

Probably, the rate of evaporation may be in proportion to how often they've played together.

Still done more than Wilshere has.

get lost, Wilshire has played well.

Ox has been better then both though.

I like James Milner but he's wasted at RB. Does not belong there.

What channel is the England game on

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Milner is no ones idea of a right back (I know Johnson isn't either but still...!) Ox-Cham has been very bright, Rooney predictably won't stay wide - might as well play him as a CF or not at all - he's having a decent game.

In the Holland - Wales game the home side are sleep walking through the game, if the Welsh had Bale they'd give 'em a game.

Rather have him then Glen Johnson, what a useless player that lad is. with Milner you get a 100 per cent effort.

How about Sturridge upfront and Rooney playing the box to box role beside Gerrard who sits? Gives you the engine of Henderson and creativity of Wilshere all in one, whilst allowing Englands best striker to start up top.

You wouldn't think Rooney only needs 9 more goals to be England's top goal scorer of all time

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭shano_88

I though Rooney played well. Ox and Barkley also very good. Defence is a shambles though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

That looked like Lambert's goal to me.

Smalling and Jones, I feel for Utd fan's if they have to start the season with those two plonkers. The Midfield and attack are very good. The Ox has been man of the match so far. He hasn't played since the start of May. I see him been a impact player at the WC.

Hodgson is comedy gold. On what planet does sending out a back four of Shaw, Jones, Smalling and Milner a week before the World Cup, make sense?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,342 ✭✭✭✭That_Guy

Saw this stat on Twitter regarding England. Incredible.
England have only ever won 5 matches in the World Cup when the opposition also scored (ARG 62, POR 66, GER 66, FRA 82 and CMR 90)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,473 ✭✭✭✭Super-Rush

I hope Jones and Smalling are United's centre back pairing next season.

Very underrated player imo. Excellent touch and awareness and a good finisher. Decent squad player.

Marco Verratti is some talent, if he was English he'd cost about £50m

Makes perfect sense, you might actually want to know how some of your replacements or emergency cover perform in their positions before the world cup.

In a few weeks time this game will be completely forgotten.

Guarantee Johnson will start at RB. Clearly the better option.

Hard to see where he'll fit in with PSG next season.

Hopefully he'll fit in as the right centre mid in Milan :pac:

He's better than Cabaye, would solve United's midfield problem as well.

Under rated ? By Chelsea too obviously given he is heading off to his retirement home.

Arguably one of Englands best players over the last 10 years but this is one wc too many. Not physically able and all the nice touches and finishing ability in the world doesn't change that.

What the.... Ross Barkley is playing?

It's a cunning way to lower our (England fans) expectations even more. They are currently quite low.

That's their cross to bear ! Hopefully Liverpool replace him too. Had a hot and cold season, in that he was 90% "cold"

Great goal. Some skill by Barkley in the build up, capped off by a thunderbastard from Rickie Lambert.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,652 ✭✭✭I am pie

    Lambertinho.

Woof. That was sweet from Barkley in the build up.

Whoever lands Barkley in the next 18 months is sorted for a decade and more.

    Real talent him.

A trio of sterling, ox and barkley would be very interesting to see here. Young and untested sure but it could be a lethal combination.

Chamberlain has to start against Italy. Can fulfill any of the roles in the AM three.

Was just thinking that as Ox-Cham rampaged down the inside left channel.

    Gerrard
    Hendo
    Sterling<>--Barkley--<>Ox-Cham
    Rooney or Sturridge

I'm going to have to don my GSP cap and say, in relation to Ross Barkley, I'm not impressed. That's not to say I don't think he's played well tonight or that he isn't a talent but, for a number 10 I think that too often he doesn't het the basics right and his influence isn't what it should be.

No, I like Wilshere a lot but was hoping for much better from him tonight.

I love the look of us going forward but if we take a single injury at the back then we might as well jump on the next plane home.
