Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Numerous priceless one liners from the panel tonight, I've a feeling this will be a good World Cup!

No disrespect to England but have they earned the right to be called possible winners? Like they are behind Switzerland in the rankings and no one is even mentioning them (A good bit behind too). England haven't in years shown the ability to win it, last was probably in the early 90s. I think it's just the reputation of an old England team that builds this sort of hype around them. Saying that, they'll probably make me look like a fool now and go on and do very well. :P

I'd imagine Swiss TV have probably commented on their team's chances of winning it... I wouldn't begrudge ITV for focusing on England, they are English after all.

They cut the anthem intentionally for affect. They did the same thing last year at the Confederations Cup. Very powerful with the whole stadium and team belting it out. I think it's shameful when our team doesn't even know it no matter where they were born.

Haven't looked forward to a World Cup this much in a long time.

What's the story with match threads during the world cup?

Yeah I'm certain I've heard them sing the second verse a capella before.

Most countries feel a great sense on pride.

    We don't.

I've made a match thread here, presume there's enough people watching the opener for it to be worthwhile :)

I've defended Giles forever but I cannot believe he just used 1970 footage to get the point across that Brazil are a "functional team".

    Real insightful John.

    Jesus wept.

Bit harsh I think....he was comparing the samba style of football they played in 1970 and how the mentality has changed to todays functional style.

Don't see what was wrong with what he did. Brazil are no way as exciting or as beautiful to watch as they were. 1982 Brazil was the most spectacular football I've ever seen but it wasn't winning football and led to the change to a more defensive style.

    Logical but a pity!

Nice of the goal line technology to clear that up. I wasn't convinced that went in.

If Jelavic had squared that header it would probably be 2-0 now.

Why? That was 20 years ago and for Colombia, completely different circumstances.

It's still early, and only first game etc., but based on what I have seen tonight I believe Brazil doesn't have a chance to go all the way. QF at best, IMO. Out as soon as they get one of the bigger teams, like Spain, Germany, probably even Chile or Netherlands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,701 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Well if there's anything positive to take from that opening game, it's united the rest of world against Brazil.

Netherlands? Really? I agree that they will struggle but the Netherlands team is nothing special at all.

Bleh, game started well and went downhill with each goal. Is there an Apres Match on after this?

So many weak links on the Brazil team, definitely shouldn't be in the final having seen that performance.
