Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What do we think about Ecuador against the Swiss tomorrow. South American sides have to have an advantage over the European sides with the climate.

7 games in and its already a better World Cup than South Africa.

After 7 games in SA, there was a total of 9 goals.
After 7 games in Brazil, we've had 25 goals.

The passionate support for the South American teams has been a stand out feature of the World Cup thus far,has made for a super charged atmosphere at their respective games.

Was out in lapa last night a big party area in Rio about 10000 argies turned up took over the streets and created an unbelievable atmosphere most people just left the nightclubs to join in.

  • 2 years later and pirlo is still a boss on the pitch. He's like neo in the matrix, everybody slows down and he looks like he hasn't even come out of second gear

Is Pirlo better than Xavi ever was?

Is Pirlo better than Xavi ever was?

They're so different there's no point even comparing them.

It's a shame they were never at the same club.

They are deep lying playmakers, its not like comparing goalkeepers to strikers!

Just home from the pub watching the games, I love this world cup :)

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Always thought Pirlo was as at least as good as Xavi but he did have a couple of poor seasons at Milan in his later years. Have to also remember that Xavi usually played in better teams.

Xavi isn't a deep lying playmaker.

A 10. He plays quite high up the field and drives the ball forward rather than sitting next to Busquets and spraying it around.

He probably has the tool set to play there, but that's just down to being a very good passer at any range.

Maybe you're thinking of Xabi Alonso?

Didn't know where else to post this.
What's with the pre match profiles where ALL the players cross their arms.
    WTF that's about.
If a couple of guys do it, they might look hard. If 20+ guys do it, they start to look like male escorts

Xavi is not a 10 and no, I'm not thinking of Xabi Alonso!

They are not , they are exactly the same type of midfielder. Deep lying and controls possession, long pinpoint passes

That's not what Xavi does. He can do it, but his most important work is short intricate passing with the likes of Messi, Iniesta or slipping little 15 yard balls behind for Pedro or Sanchez.

    Xavi is not a no.10

    Ozil, Mata, Kagawa are no.10's

IMO, if Del Bosque had have dropped Xavi and played Iniesta in his position, moved Silva to where Iniesta was and started Pedro on the right against Holland then they would have had a much more balanced team.

Just got in. Fair play, I thought Italy played well and deserved the win. I may be biased but I thought our front four played well and created more than we have done ine recent years,

The Costa Rice game made this group interesting. i thought both Uraguay and Costa Rica were terrible.

Can someone tell me where Alan Hansen is? I was almost sure he wasnt retiring until after the world cup?

Did something happen since to change that or was it always the case he wouldn't be on the world cup?

He went through the motions a bit but I actually miss him on the bbc now.

Last night resolved my own internal debate on RTE's punditry against BBC/ITV.

RTE started 20 minutes earlier, so I watched that. Bunch of old men continuously talking over each other, rehashing points they've made just 30 seconds previously. Moved to BBC at 22:20, easy going guys talking a bit of sense, nice and handy to watch.

Then again Phil Neville was pretty lame on the commentary, I guess I better keep the remote close by for the duration of the tournament.

Yeah but Im focusing on the analysis in the studio.

There was one moment where Bill O'Herlihy was trying to stir things saying "You think its a disgrace dont you John", even though Giles had said nothing of the sort and clarified that he hadnt. What the hell is he like?

It's gotten old, and needs a serious overhaul. Respect to Bill's years but I think it's best that he's going.

It has been an enjoyable tournament so far with the games being so open and having so many goals, but the officiating is a real black mark on it for me.

The Brazil game was refereed so poorly it wouldn't be a stretch to say it was fixed, Mexico had two goals wrongly ruled out against Cameroon, the penalty Spain got was very controversial, and yet another poor decision from the officials cost Drmic a goal today.

I must say the referee played a great advantage for the Switzerland winner mind, but overall the standard of refereeing has been very, very poor.

Mexico won, Spain lost, Switzerland won. Sure the Brazil game was dodgy, but it's a bit of a stretch that a few bad decisions that mostly haven't changed any results are a "black mark".

That's besides the point for me. Just because the decisions mostly haven't changed any results, it doesn't mean they don't have an effect in other ways.

For example, Dos Santos would currently be the leader as top goalscorer (by virtue of also having an assist) if his two wrongly disallowed goals had stood. These decisions could well play a part in goal difference in deciding whether a team gets out of their group or not.

The World Cup has been excellent so far, but the officiating is certainly one thing that hasn't been.

You're assuming that Mexico would have scored again had the first one been counted. Football doesn't work that way.

On a general note - match threads here, social media, some friends IRL, the amount of over reaction over the opening games is incredible. Goes for the majority of games played so far.

The quality of football may not be the best but for excitement and goals so far it has been the best tournament in a long long time.

You're assuming that Mexico would have scored again had the first one been counted. Football doesn't work that way.

Then your point regarding the decisions not changing the results is invalid, surely? If that's the case, how do you know that Cameroon, as an example, wouldn't have gone on to win 3-1 if Mexico's first goal had counted?

    Good point :pac:

All I'm trying to say is, it's hardly been awful. Ref was brilliant in England v Italy last night, the only really poor one for me has been Brazil/Croatia. There's a contentious decision every game in the Premier League too.
