So with Edinburgh back, the figure for December has only increased marginally. Surely December should be one of the busiest months for the airport and yet it's only up 1% on last year.

Manchester is down by 2x compared to last year, and stansted is down by 2x compared to last year, the fact that there was growth at all is very promising.

Fairly accurate article. I'm always shocked by the amount of people in the Shannon region getting up in the middle of the night, or booking hotel in Dublin to be up in time for early flights to Italy etc.
Ultimately Ryanair and Aer Lingus know this, so why bother.

I note that AerRyan over on the pprune.org makes reference to possible Shannon plans and in some cases perhaps using smaller planes. Which may be the answer for some routes. If you can't fill the Boeing 737's. can you make a profit with Sukhoi's or Bombardier CSeries.

The article starts off good, but a few opinions are questionable, particularly here
“It’s possible this may still change before the start of the summer season at the end of March,” he said. “Beauvais has been dropped before and made a comeback.”

No, It won't. The route engine never removes the cancelled routes in a timely fashion, horribly uneducated view, it's not actually clear who made that comment from the article .

Otherwise the article is quite truthful, it should help educate the facebook warriors who can't understand why Ryanair won't fly a route to their preferred destination - "of course there is a market, who doesn't want to go to Venice" is one I've spotted before.

Reports in the US say the airline, which is outlining its plans for Ireland later, will fly a twice weekly service between Shannon and Providence, Rhode Island with the flights set to begin on July 3rd.

The service will operate on a year-round basis.

An email from the airport states:

Shannon Airport has welcomed the announcement by Norwegian Air International of two new services starting this summer to the US as a major opportunity for tourism and wider business sectors across the west and south of Ireland.

Norwegian Air International will on July 1st commence direct services between Shannon and Stewart International Airport, Orange County – just 90 minutes from New York – and from Providence Green Airport, Rhode Island, 90 minutes from Boston and world-famous locations such as Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

2pw on sale for both. A nice roster of transatlantic services.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,162 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

2pw to airports far from hub airports seems like it could actually be okay for current services. Hopefully all airlines maintain or even expand services into 2016. I had feared for EI at Shannon, buy doubt at these frequencies they'll be overly affected.

Providence operates Mondays/Friday (Departures from U.S are Sunday/Thursday), cheapest fare is a very reasonable €140.

    Times:
    SNN-PVD 16:25-18:55
    PVD-SNN 20:35-08:25

Stewart operates Wednesdays/Sundays (Departures from U.S are Tuesdays/Saturdays) cheapest fare is again €140 but seems to be more limited.

    SNN-SWF 16:15-19:00
    SWF-SNN 20:25-08:20

So the aircraft lays over for 8 hours at shannon?

Norwegian confirms €69 flights from Shannon (Clare Herald)

From 2nd July 2017 – Norwegian will connect Shannon with the New York and Boston areas with 4 weekly transatlantic flights

*2 weekly flights (Wed, Sun) will connect Shannon with Stewart International in New York state, with fares from €69

*2 weekly flights (Mon, Fri) will offer connections from Shannon to Providence Airport, serving the greater Boston and New England areas. Fares start from €69.

Looks like it strangely enough! Similar timing in DUB and ORK.

This could just be a built in buffer to avoid issues like what was seen on their 787's.

I had the same fears for EI and others at SNN when I first heard talk of this, but it seems reasonable to suggest this arrangement could see all operators co-exist there. Time will tell.

Delta have massively cut their JFK service, it reduces from daily to 5pw from September and all flights in October are cut completely.

    Very disappointing.

Is that a direct consequence of the Norwegian flights? Or just coincidental timing?

It was in schedules before, I don't really think you will see any material impact on summer 2017. The low fares are gone, prices will only increase however it's 2018 where you should watch for changes.

    RTE News . . . .

IAG's chief executive Willie Walsh said today that Aer Lingus looks forward to competing aggressively on transatlantic routes with Norwegian and will take its opening offering "with a pinch of salt".

Mr Walsh said Aer Lingus sees opportunities for further expansion and has a better cost base than Norwegian.

He said Norwegian is "just another competitor" and that Aer Lingus will compete on "price and service' and offers a very different product to what the airline is offering.

Mr Walsh said that while he is a fan of what Norwegian has done, the company does face significant financial performance challenges.

The IAG boss also said that he supports the continuation of US pre-clearance at Dublin and Shannon airports, which he said gives a competitive advantage to the country and attracts airlines in.

He said it provides greater capacity to the US from Shannon and Dublin. (link)

Jet diverts to Shannon with cracked windscreen (Clare Herald)

A transatlantic passenger jet has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport after suffering a cracked windscreen over the Irish Sea.

United flight UA-56 was travelling from Paris to Newark in the US at the time. There were 188 passengers and crew on board.

The Boeing 767-300 jet was east of Belfast when the crew declared an emergency at around 9.30am. The crew opted to divert to Shannon even though they were closer to Dublin at the time.

Think it was a scheduled stop to pick up passengers disrupted from the diverted CDG-EWR flight.
