Irish company to maintain Boeing’s Dreamliners (Irish Times)

Lufthansa Technik Shannon spends up to €3m to prepare facilities for the long-haul craft.

Aircraft maintenance specialist Lufthansa Technik ’s Irish operation expects to begin work on Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner shortly after investing between €2 million and €3 million in its facilities.

The company is extending hangars at its Shannon base to allow it to maintain and repair large wide-body aircraft such as the Dreamliner.

From the autumn, Lufthansa will modify, repair and refurbish Boeing 737 cabins and interiors, paint the inside and outside of the craft and carry out other work such as compliance checks at the Co Clare facility.

While the company did not give an exact figure for the investment involved, it is understood to be between €2 million and €3 million. It also hopes that the extra work will result in it hiring more staff to add to its 485 workers.

    Specialist training

Staff are getting specialist training for the work. The 787, which is 68m long with a 60m wingspan, is one of the better known of the new generation of long-haul aircraft launched in recent years. Boeing has delivered 540 of them to airlines around the world has orders for 1,213 more.

Lufthansa Technik Shannon’s chief executive, Pat Shine, described the development as good news.

He pointed out that the Republic has an excellent reputation aircraft maintenance and added that “with B787 capabilities, we have extended and grown our customer offering.”

Lufthansa Technik also plans to launch specialist aircraft maintenance trainee classes in the autumn. The company’s programmes regularly draw students from around the world.

Can I ask, why are all European flights flung into the downstairs gates in the morning? It can be brutally packed and uncomfortable inside there, almost impossible to get from one side to the other.

Yet upstairs, all the gates the whole way down are USPC for the 6 flights that depart.

They lock down the area upstairs because of CBP. The aer lingus flight to Heathrow at 730 is the only one to use the upstairs gates.

I'm aware of that, but they lock the entirety of the upstairs, is this really needed?

Unfortunately yes. The way the airport is laid out all the upstairs gates have to be locked down to prevent passengers who have pre cleared cbp mixing with European passengers and possibly ending up back in the transit lounge.

They previously just locked the halfway point, is this no longer sufficient? If not why not?

Also, should the layout not just be changed (as alot of work has taken place lately anyway) to facilitate each gate to be locked individually?

They can and do lock the door between gate 7 and gate 6 to facilitate the LHR flight. But most mornings American Airlines take that stand which means from gate 6-14 are CBP flights(2 united, delta, aa, 2 aer lingus and a ba)

Is there not sufficient room to accommodate them at another stand?

    To accommodate which flights?

American airlines, or all US flights at gates 8-14?

An incubator for start-ups (The Moodie Davitt Report)

A hub dedicated to assisting start-up aviation and travel tech companies is to launch at Shannon Airport.

Datalex, a digital commerce platform provider for travel retailers, is among the partners, along with Shannon Group’s International Aviation Services Centre (IASC), DCU Ryan Academy for Entrepreneurs and aerospace company Boeing.

The ‘Propeller Shannon’ partnership, described as an “incubator for start-ups”, was announced at the Paris Air Show today (20 June).

So Shannon group subsidiary, Shannon Heritage is to all intense and purposes Bankrupt. Of course as it's a semi state funded by the taxpayer we don't say that. Yes it it vital to the Midwest tourism industry, just as well they didn't proceed with another project adjacent Bunratty.

Not having a pop at employees's and their rights. Just pointing out that the task the board has might be seen as impossible as realistically without proper regionalisation funding there's only so much they can do with the Airport and property divisions. And if your going to be down over €1 million before you start each year.

Perhaps Shannon Heritage should be given to Tourism Ireland's budget.

In fairness to Shannon Heritage they are very much a commercially driven concern.

Museums, Heritage centres around the world tend to be subsidized by their municipal authorities when income fails to match expenditure.

It will be interesting to see how they get their costs under control.

They are with out doubt a world class product with photo's of their staff sitting in millions of peoples photo albums around the world. They bring the people to fill rooms and restaurants and we need more. But funding has to be generous if costs are going to go up which they are. Are they not as relevant to Irish tourism as numerous museums etc in Dublin. A real shame ARI was stolen from it's home with profits up 17%

Saw a Starbucks sign today on the hoarding at the industrial estate entrance closest to the airport.

Are they going into the industrial estate? Where that hoarding is maybe?

That's going to be an office block, so maybe there'll be a coffee shop on the ground floor. http://www.limerickleader.ie/news/home/239089/jobs-to-follow-as-work-starts-on-10m-shannon-office-block.html

The hoarding is across from the office block site. Next to Shannon Airport House. I suppose it could be an ad for the office block though.

    Proposed Development

Development Description: for the construction of a single storey meeting hub/coffee dock building with concealed bin store and plant area, adjustments to existing parking, provision of new car and cycle parking, building signage and all ancillary landscaping, site works and services
Development Address: Shannon Industrial Estate, Shannon Free Zone, Shannon, Co. Clare
Architect Name: Location Key: SHANNON FREE ZONE

Approved and going in were sign and hoarding are, in car park. Great to see starbucks took lease. Added too the exceptional transformation of old Boart buildings managed by Collins Boyd architects and new office block. Airport avenue as now called is going to transform first impressions upon landing, which has been a huge problem in attracting investment apparently.

You cannot use this an an excuse, their costs are way out of control and it needs to be sorted. The good old days of one arm bailing out another are long gone.

At least theyre another option. The current options for lunch in Shannon are poor to be fair

Agreed. But that's how the government set it up. Now they'll have to go to war with staff. Shut various things out of season etc, that only does more damage.
