The last couple of times i was out in the airport, the lift wouldn’t go up past the first floor.

Closes in the evening so depends on the time of day. But the corridor from lift to gallery gets very hot so it may have been closed during very hot weather. Was open in June anyway.

A transatlantic flight has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport this morning after the crew reported they had smoke on board.

Virgin Atlantic flight VS-50A was travelling from Orlando, Florida in the US to Gatwick Airport in England at the time. The Airbus A330-300 jet was about an hour west of Ireland when the crew declared a MayDay and requested permission to divert to Shannon.

In the meantime, authorities at Shannon implemented an emergency plan which involved alerting the local authority fire service, HSE and Garda

Units of the fire brigade from Shannon Town were sent to the airport while two additional appliances from Ennis were mobilised to a designated holding point off the M18 near Dromoland. A number National Ambulance Service resources and Garda units also attended at the airport.

The flight landed safely at 7.21am and taxied to the terminal building accompanied by emergency vehicles.

The over 200 passengers were disembarked and taken to the airport’s transit lounge where they will await the arrival of a replacement aircraft which is expected later today.

Fire crews later boarded the aircraft to carry out an inspection while engineers were also called to check the jet for the source of the smoke

An airline spokeswoman said: “Our flight diverted to Shannon as a precautionary measure after reports of smoke onboard. The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority and we’re now doing all we can to get our customers to their final destination as quickly as possible. We'd like to apologise to our customers for the disruption to their journey and thank them for their patience.”

The Boeing 777-200 jet was south west of Ireland when the crew informed controllers they had an elderly man on board who required urgent medical attention. It’s understood that man in is 70s suffered a heart attack on board.

A transatlantic jet diverted to Shannon Airport this morning after a smoke alarm was activated in a cargo hold.

It was the third diversion to Shannon in as many days and the second by the same airline in less than a week.

Virgin Atlantic Airways flight VS-34 was travelling from Antigua in the Caribbean to Gatwick Airport in England when the crew declared an emergency at around 8.00am.

The pilot opted to divert to Shannon after reporting a fire indication in one of the jet’s cargo holds. There were 274 passengers and a crew of 13 on board.

The Airbus A330-200 rerouted to Shannon where it landed safely at 8.36am. The flight was met by airport fire and rescue crews who accompanied the jet as it taxied to the terminal. Fire officers carried out an examination of the aircraft to see whether there was any sign of smoke.

Fire crews were stood about shortly after 9.00am and it’s understood that no sign of fire or smoke was found. It’s now believed the fire indication was a false alarm.

An airline spokeswoman confirmed the flight diverted to Shannon “as a precautionary measure due to a minor technical issue.” The airline says it’s working to get passengers onto their destination as soon as possible.

Last Friday, another Virgin Atlantic Airways Airbus A330 diverted to Shannon after smoke was reported in the cockpit.

This mornings diversion was also the third at Shannon in as many days.

On Monday a British Airways flight diverted with an ill passenger while yesterday, an Air Transat jet made an unscheduled stop at the airport with another sick traveller.

That makes it a cluster of four diversions in six days.

Virgin Atlantic: Caribbean to Gatwick (Smoke Detection)
British Airways: Gatwick to Florida (Medical)
Air Transat: Toronto to Gatwick (Medical)
Virgin Atlantic: Florida to Gatwick (Smoke Detection)

I see Aer Lingus Lanzarote is bookable into next July

Interesting, could we potentially see 5x weekly to Lanzarote next year?

Must be noted that this occured before and was trimmed back once schedules were finalised.

I wonder - though a look at seatmaps show quite a few booked.
Saturday LHR rotations aren't cut back into summer either to facilitate above flight, though one slot seems to have changed times. I wonder is there something else afoot...

I'm afraid I wouldn't be so optimistic, the flights would certainly not be already booked to any real extent (airlines often don't release all seats anyway). Summer schedules aren't even being loaded yet so don't expect it to make sense! Only change I note is a change from 12:25pm to 12pm.

It would be great if something positive was afoot, however I wouldn't be particularly hopeful.

A transatlantic jet has diverted to Shannon Airport after a number of passengers and cabin crew complained of feeling unwell.

The American Airlines flight was en route from Madrid to New York at the time. There were a 170 passengers and crew on board.

The Boeing 767-300 jet was off the south coast when the crew declared an emergency and requested clearance to divert to Shannon.

It’s understood that a number of flight attendants and passengers have complained of feeling unwell after an odour was detected on board.

Airport fire crews were standing by for the jet when it landed at 4.35pm. A number of HSE ambulances and fire crews from Shannon and Ennis were also sent to the airport.

An American Airline spokesperson confirmed that flight diverted due to an odour in the cabin.

Unsurprising to see Birmingham taking a hit with improved services to Manchester and the addition of Liverpool.

I don't know if you can even call it a 'hit', it's down 60 seats!

Shannon-Edinburgh cut to 4pw (From 6pw) from late October, not operating Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Despite this, it's looking like a winter season with some growth, with Norwegian's extras and the addition of Alicante.
