Passenger jet lands on one engine after problems over Atlantic (Irish Times)

A passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport today after it suffered engine problems over the Atlantic.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight KL-765 was en route from the Caribbean Island of Bonaire to Amsterdam in the Netherlands when the crew declared an emergency at around 8.30am. There were 224 passengers and crew on board.

At the time, the twin-engine Airbus A330-200 was about 500kms south west of Shannon when the crew advised air traffic controllers they had a problem with the left side engine.

The pilot shut down the troubled engine forcing the crew to declare an emergency and divert and land as soon as possible. The flight was cleared to reroute towards Shannon while emergency crews at the airport were alerted and placed on standby.

With reverse thrust from just one engine available to help the plane stop, there were concerns that the aircraft’s braking system could overheat or catch fire during the emergency landing.

Airport crash crews took up positions at strategic locations close to the runway so that they could quickly pursue the jet once it had stopped. The jet landed safely at 9.37am.

Emergency vehicles surrounded the aircraft on the runway while a fire officer moved in to check for evidence of fire or overheating in the undercarriage.

Once it was confirmed that there was no fire the all-clear was given to the crew and the jet was able to taxi to the terminal building where engineers were waiting to investigate the problem.

Two replacement aircraft were flown to Shannon to bring them on to Amsterdam while passengers were taken to the terminal pending their arrival. The airline sent two smaller Boeing 737-800 jets as all the passengers could not be accommodated on just one.

A KLM spokesman said: “Due to a technical problem the KL-765 landed safely at Shannon, Ireland. Passengers and crew were not in danger. The passengers travelled to Amsterdam Schiphol with another KLM airplane.”

Last Friday, Irish Coast Guard and RNLI lifeboat stations along the west coast were placed on standby when a private jet suffered an engine failure over the Atlantic.

Local authority fire crews from Ennis and Shannon along with ambulances from Limerick and Ennis were also mobilised to the airport for the emergency.

The chartered business jet, with 8 people on board, landed safely.

    ****************************************************************

It’s amazing to realise the wide involvement of the emergency services that operate outside of the airport when a serious diversion is made.

Like the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI lifeboat stations, Local authority fire crews and HSE ambulances.

Why is this looping around Shannon? Is it unrelated?

Ireland welcomes Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to Shannon (Shannon Airport)

Welcoming Mayor Walsh to Shannon Airport, Group Chairman Rose Hynes said that his visit - his first international trip since being sworn in last January – will only serve to strengthen links between the Boston/Massachusetts region and the West of Ireland.

His arrival here today and the attendance of business people and politicians from across the West and South of Ireland to greet him is a further illustration of the strong links between this part of our country and the Boston area. Those links are reflected also by the very significant investment that Fortune 500 companies from the State of Massachusetts have across the West and South of Ireland, including the likes of Boston Scientific, Analog Devices and EMC and most recently Regeneron. Of course, this is a two-way street as there are several Irish businesses that have expanded into the Boston area.

I managed to extract the North American passenger statistics for the first six-months.

It's early days yet but I think that Boston's Mayor Marty Walsh would be pleased with the +29.77% growth rate with his airport.

Fourth flight diversion in a week for Shannon (Clare Herald)

A corporate jet was forced to make an unscheduled landing at Shannon on Thursday night the fourth time in a week that a transatlantic aircraft had to divert to the airport.

The latest incident involved a Bombardier BD-700 Global Express corporate jet which was en route from Teterboro, New Jersey in the US to Le Bourget Airport near Paris.

When the jet was about an hour west of Shannon, the crew advised air traffic controllers that they were experiencing technical issues.

The crew reported a possible problem with the jet’s hydraulic’s systems and opted to divert and land at Shannon as a precaution.

    ************************************************************

The Clare Herald also reported that last Saturday's diversion by a Virgin Atlantic flight was a medical emergency.

In all a busy week for the emergency services.

    Argentinian President in Shannon

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina met Pope Francis in Rome to today to discuss “global financial reform”.

Following Saturday’s meeting, Ms. Kirchner and her official delegation stopped in Shannon to refuel before flying to New York where the president will be attending the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.

CFK will deliver her UN message on Wednesday, a speech expected to focus on Argentina’s debt dispute against hedge funds that refused to enter the 2005 and 2010 restructurings, suing now the country over its defaulted bonds.

I wish her all the best and just as well none of our politicans turned up to meet her at the airport as a matter of respect, as they were very pretty useless when it came to burning our own bondholders. :(

The Miami - Amsterdam flight emergency is now the 5th diversion to Shannon in 8 days.

Strange how these diversions seem to come in clusters.

    ** Update **

Fire alert cargo jet lands in Shannon (Clare Herald)

It’s understood the Jumbo Jet was transporting 110 tonnes of flowers.

It’s believed that the fire indication was a false alarm although heat from the flowers may have triggered the system.

At the expense of the Manchester service it seems.

Not really. A Cork based 600 will be operating in place of the Shannon based 200. The aircraft and crew have swapped bases for a few days.

Shannon Airports wins global marketing awards at World Routes 2014 (Business & Leadership) :)

Shannon Airport won the category for under 4 million passengers, beating off competition from Bremen (Germany), Aksu (China), Cuneo Levaldigi (Italy) and Kilimanjaro (Tanzania).

The 2014 awards were announced last night at the three-day World Routes conference in Chicago, which is being attended by 3,000 delegates, representing 300 airlines, 800 airports and 200 tourism authorities.

The shortlist for the awards is compiled from votes cast by marketing and network development representatives from airlines worldwide.

The winner is decided by a judging panel of senior airline figures.

Shannon seems to earn a lot of airport awards, but what does the airport get out of them?

Networking opportunities with other airports, increased profile for the airport in the airline industy, increased staff morale.

I'm sure there are other reasons
