Aer Lingus' service to JFK ran today (usually doesn't run on Tuesdays) so at least that kinda makes up for it.

Maybe its only an April Fools day trick!

The Clare Herald (I think) had an article last year saying that Ryanair bought the naming rights to the Cliffs of Moher and they will now be called the -"Ryanair Cliffs of Moher". It also said they would be flying passengers along the edges of the cliffs of Moher for the views.

Hahah didn't MOL pose with that article when he was down for the 13th millionth passenger thing? Fair funny

Transaero confident of exiting examinership (Clare Herald)

Management at an aircraft maintenance facility that employs 230 people at Shannon Airport say they are looking forward to exiting Examinership later this month.

The company’s legal team had told the court that the global geo-political and economic climate had been having increasingly negative effects on TEI’s parent company, the Russian carrier Transaero Airlines.

A notice on the company’s website outlines how the combined impact of the EU/US trade sanctions, geo-political tensions, the fall in the price of oil and the Rouble currency crisis continue to impact on economic activity within Russia and between many of its main trading partners.

“This has created serious financial difficulties for Transaero Airlines who rely on the support of the Russian banks and make many of their payments in Euro and Dollars. The net effect of these events has resulted in TSO (the airline) seeking Russian government support/financial aid,” the company said.

    ************************************************************

Keeping fingers crossed here, we will know soon enough if they can continue to operate or not.

Never a dull moment in Shannon.

Shannon Airport to gather collection of airport memorabilia for transit lounge display (Shannon Airport)

Items to include photography of famous stars passing through airport, model aircraft, airport VIP signature book and items donated by public.

Shannon Airport is set to enhance its passenger experience with a collection of memorabilia for the public to view while waiting for flights to depart.

Located in the transit lounge, near the Sheridan Food Bar, the collection is one of the initiatives to mark the 70th anniversary later this year of the first commercial flight to land at Shannon. It will be the first step towards developing a wider celebration of Ireland’s most historic airport.

Rare treat for plane spotters at Shannon (Clare Herald)

Aircraft and aviation enthusiasts enjoyed a very rare treat this week with the arrival of a 73-year-old Douglas DC-3 at Shannon Airport.

The twin turboprop plane flew almost 8 hours across the Atlantic from St John’s in Newfoundland, Canada and made an overnight stop at Shannon on Wednesday.

The official aircraft viewing area on the north side of Shannon’s main runway was thronged with plane buffs and other curious onlookers.

A line of step ladders :) could be seen along the security fence with every possible vantage taken to ensure photographers got their shot of a piece of aviation history.

    ************************************************************

I believe it started in Akron-Canton Ohio with its destination as Kenya, stops in St. Johns Canada, Shannon and Malta. Just like old times.

Very very unlikely with EI IMO. DUB Hub and business schedules would be damaged and something EI is unlikely to do.

    We will see.

I can't see Dublin being damaged much. How would it be? If anything it would hurt Lufthansa.

I mean if SNN-FRA was to be operated by DUB based aircraft it could impact on EI. Now they may be able to squeeze SNN-LHR into DUB-LHR aircraft routing some days to free up the SNN aircraft to operate a route but really can't see it happening unless the LHR option is possible.

I could see Aer Lingus putting a second A319/A320 into Shannon if they are persuaded to operate 2x daily to Frankfurt. The obvious problem there is that there isn't a codeshare agreement with Lufthansa. Then they could up the 5x weekly flights to sun destinations to 7x and you have 3 daily rotations on the aircraft therefore its fully utilised.

2 daily is a bit too dream like, 2 per week would be a bit more realistic. Could be done though if as mentioned the LHR rotations got farmed out.

Cork has 4x daily to LHR, 2x daily to AMS and 1x daily to CDG. All on A320's.

Shannon has 3x daily to LHR. On an A319.

Cork has a larger market, but its not significant enough to allow that much extra connectivity. Shannon has ample access to both Limerick and Galway and is the only airport on the west coast with hub access. (Unless you count EI's 1x daily to LGW from knock). It could easily handle more HUB access. The inbound tourist market would also benefit the route a lot.

FedEx to buy Dutch rival TNT Express for €4.4bn (RTE)

The European regional headquarters of the combined companies will be at TNT Express's current headquarters at Hoofddorp outside Amsterdam, while the TNT Express hub in Liege, Belgium will be maintained as "a significant operation for the group".

The combined companies will seek to avoid significant redundancies, the statement said.

    **************************************************************

Both FedEx and TNT operate from Shannon. Will we see changes here?

Hopefully not as FedExs base is in France and we're only taking and shipping the cargo . Can't imagine TNT would be too much affected. Maybe merge to one building loss of an aircraft. You

    It's hard to know.

Looking at Wiki, it states two cargo destinations served from Shannon for Paris (Fedex) and Liege (TNT).

They are only 400 km apart.

That's taken from Facebook, 4 flights cancelled due to French ATC strike.

The only sun route not affected is SNN-FAO.

If the Faro flight is cancelled, I shall agree with you.

Anyone know why BA1 was delayed and BA3 cancelled today?

World’s biggest plane to visit Shannon (Clare Herald)

The worlds largest airplane will make a rare visit to Shannon this weekend with hundreds of plane spotters from all over the country expected to converge on the airport.

The Antonov 225 ‘Mriya’, meaning ‘Dream’, was designed and built by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukraine and first flew on December 21st 1988.

The 6-engined monster, with its 36 wheels, is now operated by Antonov Airlines, the transport arm of the Antonov Company, and holds over 300 world records for transporting oversized loads.

Because of its size, the An-225 requires a runway of between 3,000 and 3,500 metres in length to take off making Shannon’s, at 3199m (10,486ft), the only one in Ireland capable of handling the plane.

The plane’s wingspan of 88.4m (290ft) is 90 feet wider than the runway at Shannon which is 61m (200ft) wide including 8m (26ft) of shoulder on each side.

Operations Director at Shannon Airport Niall Maloney said: “We will get absolute confirmation at some stage on Saturday. But as things stand the Antonov 225 is scheduled to arrive into Shannon at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday and depart on Sunday night at 10p.m. and will, as ever, generate a lot of interest and excitement here at Shannon.”

“We had over 2,000 aviation enthusiasts here in May 2013 when it last landed at Shannon and we will be expecting a big crowd again to come and see it through out Sunday. We would urge people intending to travel to check in with our Twitter and Facebook accounts where we will be confirming the aircraft’s arrival or otherwise at the earliest opportunity.

“There are a number of vantage points around the airport to view the aircraft, including the viewing gallery in the airport itself and an outdoor viewing area adjacent to the Shannon Aerospace facility,” Mr Maloney added.
