    Re that Lynx deal...

PRIVATE COMPANY SOUGHT CONTROL OF SHANNON AIRPORT AS PART OF HUB NEGOTIATIONS
    12 January, 2016 - 08:20 General

Clare Councillors have heard that a private company which had looked to develop a major cargo hub at Shannon had effectively sought control of the Airport as part of their negotiation.

It comes after management at Shannon confirmed last month that talks on the deal had ended without agreement
The much-discussed Lynx Cargo Hub was first mooted seven years ago, and hailed as a major boost for the region at that time.
As recently as 2012 the DAA signed an agreement with the international group, but last month the now Independent Shannon confirmed the deal was dead in the water.

They said it had been conceived during better economic times, and that "ultimately, it was not possible" to strike a deal which satisfied both parties.

The issue was discussed at last night's Council meeting, which was told by local authority CEO Tom Coughlan that Lynx sought to drive a hard bargain in its dealings with the local authority.

Mr. Coughlan, a board member of Shannon Group, also said it was his understanding that Lynx had sought control of the majority of operations at the Airport during the unsuccessful negotiations with management there.

Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan, Chair of the Shannon Municipal District, says that would have been too high a price to pay.
Shannon Group has previously said that it's continuing to pursue other opportunities to develop fright business, following the failure to strike a deal with Lynx.

Would control not be better anyway. Least someone would be running it as a larger company. Or would they be keen to neglect the passenger side of it.

Shannon feeling the January blues today, with only 8 scheduled passengervflights for the whole day! (Excluding BA1 and BA3). Today's glorious schedule features no Manchester flight, no Boston or New York-JFK with Aer Lingus and only 2 Heathrow flights.

    Two questions:
Why have SNN management not briefed the board on what happened
Why have SNN management no come out in public to say why it failed

Are we seeing some backside covering here?

There is nothing wrong with it failing but they are been a little to quiet IMO.

    I don't understand this line
The much-discussed Lynx Cargo Hub was first mooted seven years ago .... They said it had been conceived during better economic times
How was 2009 "better economic times"? This seems to be the start of it
    http://www.iifa.ie/newsletters/2009/march09.html#ShannonAirport

Shannon Airport announced, on the 9th March 2009, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Lynxs Group, a Texas-based international cargo facility company with major operations in North America and Europe. Under the agreement, both companies will jointly explore the development of a major cargo facility at Shannon Airport, which is owned by the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA).
From the same issue of that newsletter in 2009
    http://www.iifa.ie/newsletters/2009/march09.html#GroundedAircraft

A record total of almost 2,300 jet airliners are now parked in deserts in the USA as a result of the global economic downturn. 1,167 aircraft were grounded last year, making 2008 the worst year for cutbacks since 2001.
    To hammer the point home

Irish Economy 2009: Ireland experiencing unprecedented contraction in output following earlier unsustainable construction-driven surge in activity
    By Finfacts Team
    Apr 3, 2009

The Central Bank said today, Ireland is currently experiencing an unprecedented contraction in output, following the earlier unsustainable construction-driven surge in activity, which peaked around the beginning of 2007. This fall in national output is set to persist this year and next. Exceptionally difficult global economic and financial conditions are making our domestic economic adjustment worse. While the initial downturn in activity was driven by the sharp decline in the Irish property and construction sectors, this has now broadened out into a marked weakening of domestic demand that is being significantly amplified by the fall in export demand as a result of the movement into recession of all our main trading partners.
So, yes, I agree. The public explanations are profoundly lacking.

DL194 from PHL-LHR diverted to SNN this morning. Aircraft: B757-200. Resumed its journey to Heathrow at 08:22.

    Diversion No.2 for 2016.

    Rather disappointing.
Seems this year will be no different. Looks like numbers will stagnate. With ADB, NCE and PIS gone, and FMM, BVA and MAN reduced, they will counter most of the gains made by the returned EDI and extra AGP, FAO and JFK.

Maybe its no harm Neil won't be around to see it?

Should also be noted that Jan, Feb and Mar had 28.4, 18.4 and 38.3% growth rates (just over 61,000 passengers) so without that in 2016, surly as things stand numbers will be very static/decline for 2016.

Also worth to note BHX only ran for 6 months last year, but will run a full year this year.

Ture and the BOS cancellations and extra LHR capacity will help.

Was BOS 5 weekly last year though like currently?

The sums on what has been lost and gained for this year

A B738 operated route twice a week for the summer schedule is around 21,000 seats

    Less Nice + Poitiers = 42,000
    Less 1 BVA, Memmingen and 2 Manchester = 42,000
    =84,000

There was also sunexpress to add to the above

Numbers might be a bit off in parts as these are back of an envelope calculations

    On the other hand
BHX operating a full year = 22,500 extra
    EDI returning = approx 35,000
    LHR A320 = 60,000 extra
    Extra AGP/FAO = 11,000 extra
    Delta 767 = 17,000 extra
    =145,500

The difference between the two is +61,500, if every single one of those seats were filled it would mean 3.5% growth this year

This seems like quite un-necessarily strong action by the senator. Its good to know that the political support of Shannon Airport is still alive and well.

Apologies for dragging up an old post, but did this Senator keep his word?

Wouldn't think it was that disappointing to be honest. There are many airports who would take nearly 5% growth.

    From earlier in the thread

"The CEO of the Shannon Airport Authority has predicted more modest growth there next year.

Neil Pakey says their focus will be on route retention, after this year saw a number of new route announcements and a 15 per cent increase in passenger numbers."

Not likely. Was not given a ticket for the Dail this time, but running again for the Seanad.

Can you break the numbers down into the following areas?
    • Transatlantic
    • Great Britain
    • Europe
    • Domestic
    • Transit

I only have the monthly total figures, I'm sure SNN press release whenever it's issued will have a breakdown.

But for Shannon its a little different. With an airport that already has such low passenger figures, well under 50% compared to just 8 years ago, an improving economy and when all airports around it are growing alot. Granted, the presence of the M7 would have some affect, but not that severe. That quoted statement was obviously in expectancy of not sufficient announcements of the lost routes. The loss of Stobart was really a kick in the teeth as to which we still haven't recovered. MAN has gone from 3x daily (With a 3pw LPL supplement) to 5x weekly. Passenger numbers will be lucky to grow anything more than 2-3% next year.

Sadly I Disagree- Dublin didn't get all of it's 25m pax from Dublin itself. The impact of the M7 is profound.

But you also have the M1, M6, M8, M9 to consider too, as well as the sheer amount of NI pax going to DUB with the weak Euro. Certainly from here, Dublin is a last choice, although Dublin is a little further from West Clare compared to the likes of Tipperary.

Often, I find people prefer Shannon to Dublin due to Shannons profound quietness and smaller size, equating to less stress.

Shannon took a serious nose dive a few years ago no doubt..but anyone who thought it was going to recover to previous numbers that quickly is deluded. Previous numbers were based on a ryanair base that was largely dependant on the leisure traveller..a market which hasnt really recovered..in the rest of the EU, as much or more so than here. Slow steady growth is preferred IMO as it may lead to sustainable numbers rather than fr launching 40 routes with low yield for both airline and airport.
Look at Cork for example..a load of new routes launched and some of them already struggling.. London city and Cardiff for example with load factors of approx 30%. God only knows what the yield is like on those. Unless those numbers improve, they are not going to be sustained. Its unlikely the us routes from Cork are going ahead this year either if the jungle drums are to believed. (Although there was always a question mark over these IMO, as Norwegian were trying to use Cork as a pawn in their battle with the US DOT).

Nobody promised or forecast huge growth at Shannon this year, so the negativity from some people is a little OTT. Slow and steady, with a sustainable cost base is a better direction for Shannon IMO. It will be a few years before we see what Shannon's market really is.
